7 Best Cruise Lines for Cruisers Over 50 in 2026 (& What to Avoid)

best cruisers for seniors

Sharing is caring!

If you’re over 50, something that’s important to know is that not every cruise ship is going to be the best fit.

Some cruise ships are too hectic, too noisy, too big, or simply have more kids onboard than you may prefer. However, there are others that feel almost perfect, depending on the type of vacation you’re looking for.

Whether you want relaxation, value, luxury, enrichment, great food, or simply a cruise that feels easy and enjoyable, there are some cruise lines that tend to work especially well for cruisers over 50, 60, 70 and beyond.

For context, I’m 54, my husband Frank is 60, and after more than 40 cruises, I definitely have some thoughts.

This isn’t meant to be a stereotypical “best cruises for seniors” list. Everyone’s needs and preferences are different. Some mature travelers want quiet luxury, while others want live music, late nights, and a little fun.

However, there are a few things that tend to matter to many cruisers over 50, including dining, entertainment, enrichment, accessibility, service, value, and the overall vibe onboard.

Here are the best cruise lines for seniors and cruisers over 50!

Best Cruise Lines For Seniors Over 50

1. Holland America Line

holland america cruise

Holland America is one of the first cruise lines that comes to mind when people think of cruises for mature travelers. However, I do think there’s a bit of a misconception that Holland America is “just for old people.”

That really isn’t the case.

Holland America has a traditional cruise feel that many longtime cruisers appreciate. The first time I sailed with Holland America, I was around 50, and there were so many things I loved about the experience.

Why Holland America Is Good for Cruisers Over 50

One of the biggest advantages of Holland America is the size of their ships. If you don’t want a mega-ship with water slides, zip lines, and all the bells and whistles, Holland America may be a great fit.

In general, Holland America ships are midsize or smaller. In my experience, the newer Pinnacle Class ships are especially nice. These include:

  • Koningsdam
  • Nieuw Statendam
  • Rotterdam

These ships are large enough to have what you want and need, without feeling overwhelming or requiring endless walking from one end of the ship to the other.

Because of the ship size and layout, Holland America can also be a good choice for travelers with mobility challenges.

Dining on Holland America

holland america morimoto by sea

When it comes to food, I’d describe Holland America’s dining as very good to excellent. The food has a classic cruise feel, and the presentation and quality are quite good.

One thing many cruisers really appreciate is that the buffet is served by the crew rather than being fully self-serve. This can feel cleaner, easier, and a little more refined.

Holland America also offers free room service, which is a nice perk and something many cruisers still value.

Entertainment and Live Music

Holland America is more enrichment and culturally focused than some other cruise lines. It doesn’t necessarily have the same big “wow” entertainment or Broadway-style production shows that you might find elsewhere.

That said, Holland America is not sleepy, especially if you enjoy live music!

On the Pinnacle Class ships, Holland America’s Music Walk is a real highlight. You’ll find several music venues with different styles of live entertainment, including rock music, piano music, and blues-inspired performances.

This is definitely the liveliest area of the ship in the evening.

Another fun event is Orange Night, which is a nod to Holland America’s Dutch heritage. Guests dress in orange, there’s music and dancing, and it’s a lot of fun.

So if you think Holland America is only for people who want to go to bed at 8:30 p.m., Orange Night might prove otherwise.

Cabins and Service

Holland America cabins are well-appointed, and one thing I really appreciate is the twice-a-day housekeeping.

You’ll usually have morning cabin service as well as evening turndown service. Holland America also often has two cabin attendants, which can make the service feel a little more traditional and attentive.

Holland America Value

In my opinion, Holland America can offer very good value. You can often find some excellent cruise deals, and there are several cabin categories to choose from.

Holland America also offers the Have It All package, which can include a beverage package, shore excursion credit, specialty dining, and more.

Things to Watch For:

While Holland America’s newer ships have a great layout and the Music Walk is a big plus, some older ships may feel quieter in the evening. After about 9 p.m., you might need to look a little harder to find where the action is.

Another thing to know is that Holland America does attract families during school breaks, holidays, and Alaska sailings. If you’re expecting a completely child-free cruise, that may not always be the case.

However, Holland America does have kids clubs, and there is usually an adult-only pool area.

2. Princess Cruises

Princess Cruises is another excellent cruise line for mature travelers. While Princess does attract many cruisers over 50, Frank and I started sailing with Princess when we were in our late 30s and 40s, and we’ve always enjoyed it.

In my opinion, Princess has something for everyone, but it has a special appeal for more mature cruisers.

Why Princess Is Good for Cruisers Over 50

Princess cruise ships tend to feel a little livelier than Holland America, especially in the atrium or Piazza.

You might find dancing, Zumba, live music, audience participation games, and other activities happening throughout the day and evening.

As many people in the Life Well Cruised community have said, Princess has a good energy without feeling rowdy or chaotic.

Entertainment on Princess Cruises

Sun Princess Cruise Ship Entertainment

Princess has invested in entertainment over the last few years, and overall, the production shows and guest entertainers are quite good.

You may see singers, mentalists, acrobats, comedians, and other special performers onboard.

Princess doesn’t feel like a party cruise line, but it also doesn’t feel too quiet. For many cruisers over 50, it strikes a nice balance.

Dining on Princess Cruises

Princess offers a lot of dining options, especially on the newer ships and even many ships built within the last decade.

You’ll find:

One thing you really have to try on Princess is the pizza. Princess is known for having some of the best pizza at sea, and even the poolside pizza is really good.

For specialty restaurants, two of my personal favorites are The Catch by Rudi and Sabatini’s.

That said, I have heard from some loyal Princess cruisers that certain dishes can be a bit hit or miss lately. Overall, I still think Princess dining is good, but it’s worth mentioning.

Princess Medallion Technology

Ocean Medallion Sportband

One area where I think Princess really stands out is technology.

The Princess Medallion makes so many things easier. You don’t have to constantly take out your cruise card to open your cabin door or get on and off the ship. It’s basically hands-free, which is especially nice when you’re carrying a coffee, a beach bag, or both.

Another helpful feature is that you can use the app or onboard portals to find the person you’re traveling with. This can be useful if your spouse, friend, or travel companion isn’t answering texts or if you just want to know where they are on the ship.

For mature travelers, this can be a surprisingly practical feature.

Laundry Rooms on Princess

Another Princess feature I really appreciate is the self-service laundry room.

On many Princess ships, you can do your own laundry and iron your clothing. This is a big plus, especially on longer cruises, Alaska cruises, or back-to-back sailings.

Princess Cruises Value

Princess offers very good value, especially when you compare what’s included with their cruise packages.

Princess Plus and Princess Premier can include things like crew appreciation, beverage packages, Wi-Fi, specialty dining, casual dining, and other perks, depending on the package.

For many cruisers, Princess Plus in particular can be one of the better values at sea.

Things to Watch For

Some older Princess ships may need a little TLC. While the cabins are generally well-designed, on older Princess ships, a standard balcony cabin may not automatically include a sofa.

If having a sofa is important to you, look carefully at the cabin category. You may want a deluxe balcony cabin instead of a standard balcony.

3. Celebrity Cruises

Celebrity-Edge-cruise-ship

Celebrity Cruises is another excellent option for cruisers over 50 who want a more upscale experience.

Celebrity has a high-end, modern, and refined feel, especially on the Edge Class ships. These ships are stylish and contemporary, but still classy.

If you’ve sailed on Royal Caribbean before, Celebrity feels a little bit like Royal Caribbean’s more mature, very cool older sister.

Why Celebrity Is Good for Mature Travelers

Celebrity attracts a mature crowd, but it also feels youthful and energetic. You’ll find many guests in their 50s, 60s, and 70s, but the vibe doesn’t feel old-fashioned.

The ships feel modern, the spaces are beautiful, and the overall atmosphere is upscale without being too formal.

Dining on Celebrity Cruises

Celebrity’s food is very good, and in my opinion, it’s among the best of the mainstream and premium cruise lines right now.

On our last Celebrity cruise, we were especially impressed with the buffet. The quality and variety were excellent.

Celebrity also shines in the main dining room. The food is consistently good, with plenty of options. If you’re a foodie, Celebrity may be a great fit.

The specialty restaurants are also very good, although they can be pricey.

Entertainment and Nightlife

Celebrity offers innovative production shows and strong guest entertainment. If you enjoy a silent disco, Celebrity does this especially well.

While Celebrity has some enrichment, this is not as much of a focus as it is on a line like Holland America, Cunard, or Viking.

The overall vibe, especially on the Edge Class ships, can be lively. The Martini Bar area in particular can get quite energetic and sometimes loud in the evening.

If you prefer a quieter cruise experience, you may want to consider one of Celebrity’s older ships rather than the newest Edge Class ships.

Celebrity Cabins

Inside cruise cabin

Celebrity cabins are spacious and beautiful.

However, on the Edge Class ships, the Infinite Veranda cabins are a little controversial. Some people love them because the cabin feels more spacious. Others miss having a traditional outdoor balcony.

If you’re someone who really loves stepping outside onto a balcony, make sure you understand the difference before booking.

Service on Celebrity

Celebrity service is very good. The crew is professional, accommodating, and attentive.

That said, in my opinion, the service may not feel quite as warm as some other cruise lines. However, I think this is intentional and fits Celebrity’s more polished, modern style.

Non-Smoking Casino

One thing I really like about Celebrity is that the casino is non-smoking. For many cruisers, this is a major plus.

Celebrity Value

Celebrity offers a high-quality cruise experience, and for what you get, it can be a good value.

However, Celebrity is often more expensive than Holland America or Princess. The specialty dining and onboard extras can also cost more.

Celebrity’s All Included package includes a beverage package and basic Wi-Fi, but gratuities are not included, so it’s important to price everything out carefully.

4. Virgin Voyages

Virgin Voyages Everything You Should Know

Virgin Voyages might not be the first cruise line you think of for cruisers over 60 or 70, but it’s worth considering for the right person.

We’ve sailed on Virgin Voyages a couple of times, and each time, we found that the age group onboard was actually quite varied. We met several travelers in their 60s and 70s who were really enjoying the experience.

Why Virgin Voyages Can Work for Cruisers Over 50

Virgin Voyages is truly adults only. Guests must be 18 or older, so you won’t find children splashing in the pool or running around the ship.

That alone can make Virgin appealing to many mature travelers.

However, Virgin is also very non-traditional. It’s fun, unconventional, and a little bit “out there.” This can be a good thing or a bad thing, depending on your personality.

What’s Included on Virgin Voyages

Virgin-Vogages-main-pool-sea-day

Virgin Voyages has a pricing model that includes quite a lot.

There are no traditional specialty restaurants that cost extra. Instead, the restaurants onboard are included, and many are very good quality.

Virgin also includes basic Wi-Fi and fitness classes.

One important update is that gratuities used to be included, but Virgin Voyages has removed this from their pricing model, so be sure to check the current details when booking.

Entertainment and Vibe

Virgin Voyages has less structure and fewer traditional cruise activities than many other cruise lines.

Don’t expect Broadway-style shows or a formal cruise atmosphere. The entertainment can be quirky, modern, and sometimes adult-themed.

Virgin also has a reputation as a party cruise line, but that doesn’t mean everyone is up late every night. There are plenty of places to relax, and not everyone participates in Scarlet Night.

Although, whether you’re dancing around the pool or people-watching from a deck above, Scarlet Night can be a lot of fun. You only live once, right?

Itineraries

Virgin Voyages often offers interesting itineraries, including longer port days and overnight stays.

We did a Mediterranean cruise with Virgin Voyages that included two overnights and some long days in port, and I loved that.

Things to Watch For

Virgin Voyages is not for everyone. You do have to be comfortable with things being a little risqué and unconventional.

If you like a very traditional cruise experience, Virgin may not be the best fit. But if you’re open-minded and want something adults-only and different, it could be a great choice.

5. Norwegian Cruise Line

Norwegian-Joy-in-Bermuda

Norwegian Cruise Line may not be the first cruise line that comes to mind for mature travelers, but many people in the Life Well Cruised community have shared that they really enjoy sailing with Norwegian.

Norwegian feels like a mid-range cruise line. It sits somewhere between family-focused cruise lines like Carnival and Royal Caribbean and more premium lines like Celebrity, Princess, and Holland America.

Why Norwegian Can Be Good for Cruisers Over 50

Norwegian is relaxed and casual, with a freestyle approach to cruising.

You don’t have to follow strict dining times or dress codes, which many cruisers appreciate.

Norwegian is also a strong option for solo cruisers. They offer several types of solo cabins, which can help solo travelers avoid paying the full double-occupancy rate.

Choosing the Right Norwegian Ship and Itinerary

Norwegian can attract a lot of families and children during school breaks, especially on newer ships with more family-friendly attractions.

However, if you choose a smaller ship, a longer itinerary, or a destination like Canada and New England, you may find a much more mature crowd.

We did a wonderful Canada and New England cruise with Norwegian, and there were very few children onboard.

Entertainment and Packages

Norwegian is more entertainment-focused than enrichment-focused.

If you enjoy shows, music, comedy, and casual fun, Norwegian can be a good fit.

Norwegian also offers the Free at Sea package, which can include a beverage package and specialty dining meals. Personally, I think this can be a good value, depending on the sailing and what’s included.

Things to Watch For

Norwegian does have several areas where extra charges and add-ons can come into play. It’s important to look at the total cost of your cruise vacation, not just the base fare.

6. Cunard

If you’re a mature traveler who loves the idea of dressing up and having a cruise that feels elegant and old-world, Cunard may be a wonderful option.

Cunard is especially well known for transatlantic crossings, but the cruise line also offers many other interesting itineraries.

Why Cunard Appeals to Mature Travelers

I haven’t sailed on Cunard yet, but I have friends who sail with Cunard regularly and love it.

Cunard has traditionally been known for being formal and classic. While it still has a more traditional feel than many other cruise lines, friends have told me that it has become a little less formal in the last year or so.

Cunard attracts mature travelers with its enrichment focus, ballroom dancing, lectures, guest speakers, and traditional atmosphere.

If you enjoy dressing up, attending lectures, and experiencing a more refined style of cruising, Cunard may be a great fit.

7. Viking

Viking is another cruise line that comes up often when talking about mature travelers.

I haven’t sailed with Viking yet, and for this list, I’m mostly focusing on ocean cruise lines rather than luxury cruises or river cruises. However, Viking is definitely worth mentioning.

Why Viking Is Popular With Mature Travelers

Many people have shared that they absolutely love Viking, especially for its enrichment-focused experience.

Viking appeals to travelers who want a quieter, more destination-focused cruise with lectures, cultural experiences, and a more relaxed atmosphere.

Another thing people like about Viking is that so much is included in one fare. Many cruisers say they don’t feel nickel-and-dimed, which is a big plus.

Viking is definitely on my list to try in the future.

Which Cruise Line Is Best for Seniors?

The best cruise line for seniors or cruisers over 50 really depends on what you want from your vacation.

If you want a classic cruise experience with great live music and good value, Holland America is an excellent choice. If you want a lively but not rowdy atmosphere with great technology and strong value, Princess Cruises is a great option.

If you want a more upscale, modern cruise with excellent food, Celebrity Cruises may be the best fit. If you want an adults-only cruise that’s fun, different, and a little unconventional, Virgin Voyages is worth considering.

If you want a relaxed, casual cruise with good solo options, Norwegian Cruise Line may be right for you. If you love tradition, elegance, and dressing up, Cunard could be a wonderful match.

Finally, if you want enrichment, cultural experiences, and a more inclusive feel, Viking is definitely one to look at.

Tips for Choosing the Best Cruise if You’re Over 50

Before booking your cruise, think carefully about the type of experience you want.

Consider the Ship Size

Mega-ships can be exciting, but they can also mean more walking, more crowds, and more noise. Smaller and midsize ships may be easier to navigate and more relaxing.

Look at the Itinerary

Longer cruises, repositioning cruises, Canada and New England cruises, Alaska cruises outside school breaks, and transatlantic sailings often attract a more mature crowd.

Avoid School Breaks if You Prefer Fewer Kids

Even cruise lines that attract older travelers can have lots of families during holidays, summer vacation, spring break, and Alaska season.

Check What’s Included

Some cruise fares may look expensive at first, but include more. Others may have a lower base fare but more add-ons. Always compare the total cost.

Think About the Evening Vibe

Some ships are lively at night, while others get quiet early. Neither is wrong — it just depends what you enjoy.

Final Thoughts

There are so many great cruise options for travelers over 50, 60, 70 and beyond. The key is not just choosing the “best” cruise line overall, but choosing the best cruise line for you.

Some cruisers want enrichment and quiet spaces. Others want live music, great dining, and a little dancing after dinner. Some want adults-only, while others enjoy a multigenerational atmosphere.

The good news is that there’s a cruise line and ship for almost every style of traveler.

Personally, I think Holland America, Princess, Celebrity, Virgin Voyages, Norwegian, Cunard, and Viking all have something special to offer mature cruisers as long as you choose the right ship, itinerary, and time of year.

Have you cruised with any of these cruise lines? Which cruise line do you think is best for cruisers over 50? Please share your thoughts in the comments below.

Happy cruising!
