Carnival Cruise Line just gave guests a cruise experience that was quite literally out of this world.
On August 12, 2026, guests sailing aboard Carnival Legend witnessed a total solar eclipse from the open sea during Carnival Cruise Line’s first-ever solar eclipse cruise. The special 11-day Carnival Journeys sailing departed Dover, England, on August 9 and is visiting destinations in Spain, Portugal, Belgium and France. However, one of the biggest highlights of the itinerary didn’t happen in port at all.
Instead, Carnival Legend was positioned along the path of totality, giving passengers a front-row seat as the moon passed in front of the sun.
Carnival Guests Watch the Total Solar Eclipse at Sea
On August 12, passengers gathered on the ship’s outdoor decks as Carnival Legend sailed beneath the eclipse’s shadow. Carnival provided guests with special eclipse-viewing glasses so they could safely watch the rare celestial event.
The cruise line also planned eclipse-themed programming and entertainment around the occasion, along with special beverage offerings and other activities taking place throughout the voyage.
While many cruisers choose an itinerary based on the ports they’ll visit, this sailing was designed around an experience that could only happen at a very specific place and time.
Watching a total solar eclipse is already unusual, but being able to experience one from the middle of the ocean adds another layer to the event.
The Cruise Is Part of Carnival Journeys
The solar eclipse sailing is part of Carnival Journeys, Carnival Cruise Line’s collection of longer cruises featuring more immersive itineraries and unique onboard experiences.

Carnival Firenze Solar Eclipse Cruise: February 2027
Carnival Firenze will offer a particularly unique eclipse sailing early next year.
The ship is scheduled to depart Buenos Aires, Argentina, on February 2, 2027, for a 16-day Carnival Journeys cruise. The sailing will position guests to experience an annular solar eclipse on February 6.
Along the way, Carnival Firenze will visit destinations including:
- Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
- Maceio, Brazil
- Grenada
- Martinique
- St. Maarten
This itinerary combines a rare eclipse-viewing opportunity with an extended South American and Caribbean cruise.
Carnival Sunshine Solar Eclipse Cruise: August 2027
Carnival Sunshine will also get in on the eclipse action next summer. The ship is scheduled to depart Barcelona, Spain, on July 25, 2027, for a 10-day Mediterranean cruise.
The itinerary has been planned to put passengers in position for the August 2 solar eclipse. For cruisers who have been considering a Mediterranean vacation, this could certainly add an unusual bucket-list experience to the itinerary.
Carnival Miracle Solar Eclipse Cruise: August 2027
Carnival Miracle will offer another eclipse-focused Carnival Journeys sailing from England. The ship departs Dover on July 29, 2027, on an 11-day itinerary visiting Spain, Portugal and France.
Importantly, Carnival has included a dedicated day at sea for eclipse viewing, positioning the ship for the August 2 event. That dedicated sea day means passengers won’t have to choose between exploring a port and watching the eclipse. The celestial event itself becomes one of the main attractions of the cruise.
Are Eclipse Cruises Becoming a New Cruise Trend?
Cruise lines are always looking for ways to make certain sailings stand out, and special events at sea can turn an itinerary into something cruisers may remember for years.
