Celebrity Cruises has reached a major milestone in the development of its new river cruise brand, with Celebrity Compass officially completing its float out in the Netherlands.
The new ship will be the first vessel in the upcoming Celebrity River Cruises fleet, which is scheduled to welcome its first guests in August 2027.
The float out marks the completion of the ship’s exterior construction and the first time Celebrity Compass has touched the water.
Celebrity Compass Completes First River Journey
The multi-day float out process began on September 9, 2026, at the Zwijnenburg shipyard in Rotterdam.
After entering the water, Celebrity Compass made her first journey, traveling approximately 80 kilometers by river before arriving at TeamCo Shipyard in Heusden on September 12.
The ship will now enter the next phase of construction as Celebrity prepares for its highly anticipated move into river cruising.
Celebrity Cruises President Laura Hodges Bethge called the float out a “defining milestone” for the new brand.
“With Celebrity Compass, we’re reimagining river cruising The Celebrity Way, combining elevated design, exceptional hospitality, and destination-rich experiences to create a journey unlike any other on the river,” she said.
Celebrity Is Bringing Its Ocean Cruise Style to the Rivers
Celebrity River Cruises will bring many of the design features and onboard experiences Celebrity cruisers are already familiar with to a much smaller river cruise setting.
One of the biggest focuses will be connecting guests with the destinations they’re sailing through.
Celebrity Compass will feature expansive open decks with 360-degree views, allowing passengers to take in the scenery throughout their sailing.
One particularly unusual feature will be the Magic Edge, described by Celebrity as the first cantilevered dining pods on a river cruise ship.
These dining spaces will extend over the side of the vessel, giving guests the feeling of dining directly above the river.
The ship will also feature an infinity-edge plunge pool overlooking the surrounding scenery.
Staterooms Will Include King-Sized Beds and Balconies
Celebrity is also putting an emphasis on spacious and residential-style accommodations.
Celebrity Compass will feature five stateroom categories, with king-sized beds in every cabin, increased storage and layouts designed to make better use of the available space.
Spacious balconies and large amounts of natural light are also being incorporated into the cabin designs.
According to Celebrity, the goal is to create staterooms that feel more like living spaces rather than simply somewhere to sleep.
Eight Restaurants and Bars
Dining will be another major focus onboard Celebrity Compass.
The ship will offer eight restaurants and bars, including several venues familiar to Celebrity ocean cruisers.
These include:
- Martini Bar
- Sunset Bar
- Café Al Bacio
Celebrity also says guests will have access to flexible all-day dining, complimentary breakfast room service and 24/7 meal options, something the cruise line says will set its river cruise experience apart.
A New Type of River Cruise Ship
Celebrity Compass is also being built with a new hull design intended to make navigating European rivers easier.
The ship will use a hybrid propulsion system along with technology designed to reduce both noise and vibration onboard.
Visually, Celebrity appears to be taking a very different approach from many traditional river cruise ships, with a contemporary exterior inspired by the modern design Celebrity has become known for on its ocean-going fleet.
Celebrity River Cruises Gets Closer to Launch
Celebrity’s entry into river cruising is one of the most interesting developments happening in the cruise industry right now.
Rather than creating a completely separate experience, the cruise line appears to be bringing many recognizable parts of the Celebrity brand including its contemporary design, popular bars and cafés, elevated dining and destination-focused approach to the river cruise market.
With Celebrity Compass now officially in the water, the next stages of construction will focus on completing the ship ahead of its August 2027 debut.
