I Was the Youngest Person on My River Cruise – Here’s What Surprised Me!

Sharing is caring!

After going on more than 40 ocean cruises, I started looking for different kinds of travel experiences. That’s when I stumbled upon river cruising. The more I researched, the more intrigued I became. Especially when I came across AmaWaterways’ AmaMagna, one of the largest river cruise ships in Europe.

For context, I wasn’t traveling alone. I cruised with my parents (who many of you know from Life Well Cruised), and this was a first for all of us. At 25 years old, I knew I wasn’t exactly the typical river cruiser. I’d always heard that river cruises were “for old people”. Honestly, I expected the pace to be slower and maybe even a little boring compared to the big ocean cruise ships I’m used to.

To put those assumptions to the test, I spent seven days onboard the AmaMagna, sailing along the Danube. In this post, I’ll share what the AmaWaterways experience was really like, the highlights, and what it’s like being one of the youngest passengers on a river cruise.

We were hosted by AmaWaterways on this cruise, however all opinions are my own.

About AmaWaterways and AmaMagna:

AmaWaterways is a family-owned luxury river cruise line known for its service, cuisine, and destination-focused experiences. In 2019, they introduced the AmaMagna, their flagship vessel and the largest river cruise ship in Europe.

What makes the AmaMagna stand out is her double width design. Most river cruise ships are about 38 feet wide, but the AmaMagna stretches nearly 72 feet across, making her almost twice as wide as a standard river vessel.

Despite her size, she still carries just 196 guests (160 passengers on our sailing), supported by a crew of about 70–75 staff members. This impressive guest-to-staff ratio creates a more intimate feel compared to ocean cruising.

The extra width allows for amenities you don’t usually find on river ships, such as multiple dining venues, a full fitness center, a pool and hot tub, wellness studio, a cinema, and even a pickleball court.

It’s this combination of space and luxury that sets the AmaMagna apart, especially for travelers like me who are used to larger ocean ships but still want the personalized feel of river cruising.

My Danube Itinerary:

My journey onboard the AmaMagna was a 7-night sailing along the Danube, starting in Vilshofen, Germany and ending in Budapest, Hungary. Over the week, we visited four countries: Germany, Austria, Slovakia, and Hungary, with a mix of small towns, historic capitals, and incredible scenery in between.

Ports of call:

  • Vilshofen, Germany
  • Passau, Germany
  • Linz (with Salzburg option), Austria
  • Scenic cruising through the Wachau Valley, Austria
  • Vienna, Austria
  • Bratislava, Slovakia
  • Budapest, Hungary

Life Onboard Between Ports

One of the biggest surprises of river cruising was how much there was to do onboard between ports. Scenic cruising days were some of my favorites. The cruise manager would often get on the microphone to point out historic landmarks along the river, sharing fascinating facts that brought the scenery to life.

AmaMagna also offered a variety of enrichment activities. I joined an apple strudel–making class, which felt very Austrian, and there was even a photography workshop designed to help guests capture better photos of their trip.

For those who like to stay active, the ship had more options than I expected. There were pickleball matches, stretching and cycling classes, and small-group workouts with the wellness director. On warmer days, guests could relax in the pool and hot tub, which I managed to try at least once.

Of course, one of the best parts of river cruising is simply enjoying the views. The AmaMagna has plenty of open deck space, making it easy to grab a spot and watch castles, vineyards, and small towns glide by. A fun detail I loved: the top-deck furniture and railings are transformative and can lower to allow the ship to pass under low bridges. Watching that process in action while sailing was surprisingly cool to see.

Another unique aspect of river cruising is entering locks. At times, the ship was so close to the concrete walls that we could practically reach out and touch them!

My Experience Onboard AmaMagna

Spending a full week on the AmaMagna gave me plenty of time to take in what makes river cruising unique. Beyond the ship itself, I quickly noticed the dynamics of the guests onboard, how active the atmosphere really was, and what day-to-day life felt like socially.

Demographics and First Impressions:

From the moment I stepped onboard, my first impression was how classy and sophisticated the AmaMagna felt. Unlike the livelier, sometimes party-like atmosphere of ocean cruises, this ship had a more relaxed and refined vibe, but not in an unwelcoming way.

The journey started even before we reached the ship. The bus transfer from Munich to Vilshofen was comfortable and well-organized, and once we arrived, AmaWaterways staff immediately took care of our luggage. The embarkation process was incredibly smooth; within minutes we were onboard, settled into our cabin, and exploring the ship.

Soon after, we gathered for welcome cocktails where the cruise manager shared details about the ship and what to expect during the week. It didn’t take long for me to notice how warm and friendly both the crew and fellow passengers were.

Although most cruisers were older than me, I was surprised by how active and fit they seemed.I didn’t see anyone with a walker or wheelchair, and in fact, many seemed in better shape than I expected.

To my surprise, there were also about six other guests under 30, which instantly made me feel a little less out of place.

How Active Were Other Guests?

For the most part, I found that other guests were very active. I joined several hikes and bike rides with fellow passengers, and I was genuinely impressed by how much energy and enthusiasm they brought. I even played a few rounds of pickleball and was surprised by how skilled some of the other guests were. It really felt like, for many of them, age was just a number and they were determined to stay as active as possible.

There were plenty of moments when I passed by the gym and noticed guests working out or joining a fitness class led by the wellness director. Of course, not everyone was pushing themselves athletically, but that didn’t mean they were inactive. For those who preferred a slower pace, there were always options like joining a walking tour in port or simply relaxing on deck and taking in the scenery while cruising.

The Social Side of River Cruising:

One of the things that surprised me most was the social side of river cruising. Before sailing with AmaWaterways, I assumed that guests would mostly want to keep to themselves. What I experienced was the complete opposite.

River cruise passengers were often encouraged to mingle, and AmaWaterways made this easy by having most dining tables set for four to eight people, which felt more like traditional ocean cruising.

With only 160 guests onboard, it was also easy to run into the same friendly faces throughout the week. Since I was one of the younger cruisers, I was easy to recognize, and I found myself chatting and mingling with other passengers often.

I was also surprised by how lively the ship felt at night. The entertainment crew often hosted small parties, and there were evenings when the dance floor was full of passengers having fun.

While I did not join in much myself, my parents definitely did and they had a great time. It showed me that river cruising is not just about quiet evenings, there is room for energy and fun too.

Whether you are younger or older, you can expect many of the guests to be warm, approachable, and genuinely interested in connecting, which created a really welcoming environment.

What I Liked About the River Cruise

Going into this trip, I wasn’t sure if river cruising would be for me. However, after a week on the AmaMagna, there were so many aspects of the experience that really stood out in the best way.

From the level of service to the onboard amenities and the immersive excursions, I found myself enjoying things I never expected. Here are a few highlights that made the cruise memorable:

The Service and Crew

One of the things that stood out most to me on the AmaMagna was the service. With only 160 guests onboard, the crew was able to offer a level of attention that felt incredibly personal and accommodating. Unlike on large ocean ships where you may only see the same waiter once or twice, here I got to know the staff over the course of the week.

The attention to detail was another big difference from ocean cruising. From remembering drink preferences to greeting guests by name, the crew went above and beyond to make the experience feel special. Seeing the same familiar faces each day, both in the dining room and around the ship, added a warm and welcoming touch that made the trip unforgettable.

Fitness and Wellness Amenities

Before this trip, I assumed it would be difficult to stay active on a river cruise. I pictured lots of sightseeing but not many opportunities to exercise onboard. What I found on the AmaMagna was the complete opposite.

The ship had a well-equipped gym, a running track, and even a pickleball court, which made it easy to stay active throughout the week. Having these options was one of the highlights of sailing with AmaWaterways and a big part of what made the experience stand out for me.

Food and Dining Experiences

The food and dining onboard the AmaMagna exceeded my expectations. The ship has four different restaurants: the Main Dining Room, The Chef’s Table, Jimmy’s Wine Bar & Restaurant, and Al Fresco. Each offered its own atmosphere and menu, which made dining feel varied and special throughout the week.

One highlight was The Chef’s Table, a multi-course tasting menu served in an intimate setting at the back of the ship. Officially, each passenger is invited to dine there once per sailing, but we asked if we could attend a second time and the staff was happy to accommodate us on the last night since space was available. That extra effort from the crew made the experience even more memorable.

What also surprised me was how many of the dishes in the Main Dining Room were inspired by the destinations we were visiting. From Austrian specialties to Hungarian flavors, the menus reflected the local culture and added another layer of connection to the places along the Danube.

Excursions and Shore Experiences

One of the best parts of sailing with AmaWaterways was the time spent in port. All excursions and tours are included in the cruise fare, which made exploring each destination both seamless and stress-free.

In every port, AmaWaterways offered three to four different excursion options, designed to suit a variety of activity levels. Since this itinerary was in Europe, many cities came with hills, cobblestone streets, and plenty of stairs.

AmaWaterways did a great job of accommodating this by offering choices such as a bike tour, a hiking tour (which often meant climbing a steep hill or set of steps for the best views), and a relaxed city walking tour or bus tour.

I loved that these options were available, especially since I was traveling with my parents. It allowed us to tailor our experiences: I often chose the more physically demanding bike rides and hikes, while my parents preferred the easier-paced walking tours.

Having those flexible excursion options meant that everyone onboard, regardless of age or activity level, could enjoy the ports in a way that suited them best.

My Favorite Shore Experience:

One of the excursions that stood out most to me was the bike tour in Krems. Lasting nearly three hours, it was an incredible way to explore several different villages along the Danube.

At first, I was a little nervous to join since I hadn’t done a long bike ride in years, but I am so glad I did. Although there were a few moments that felt challenging, it turned out to be one of the most memorable travel experiences I have ever had.

We pedaled along the Danube, through scenic vineyards, medieval towns, and quiet villages, even taking a small ferry ride across the river at one point. The tour was guided, and our guide was not only knowledgeable but also very personable, sharing plenty of stories and local insights along the way.

By the end of the ride, I felt both accomplished and grateful that I had pushed myself to try it.

General Vibe

The overall vibe of sailing on the AmaMagna was very different from what I am used to on ocean cruises. Instead of a fast-paced, high-energy environment with thousands of passengers, this felt much more relaxed, intimate, and community-oriented.

With only 160 guests onboard, it never felt crowded, and it was easy to find a quiet space to enjoy the scenery or strike up a conversation with fellow passengers.

What I especially appreciated were the little touches AmaWaterways added to make the experience feel special. In our very first port of Vilshofen, we were welcomed with a traditional Oktoberfest celebration complete with local music, dancing, and beer.

Later in the week there was a fun ice cream party, and as we sailed into Budapest, the crew hosted a barbecue on the top deck. These moments created a sense of celebration that elevated the entire trip.

I also loved how each port stop felt so much more intimate compared to ocean cruising. Instead of thousands of passengers flooding into a city all at once, it was just 160 of us, which made every stop feel more personal and less overwhelming.

River cruising seemed to have a stronger focus on the connection between the cruiser and the destination, and that made the trip feel more immersive and meaningful

What Surprised Me on the River Cruise

Although my overall experience on the AmaMagna was very positive, there were still a few things that caught me off guard. Some of these surprises were pleasant and challenged my preconceived ideas of river cruising, while others highlighted areas where I think there is still room for improvement.

Set Dining Times

One of the biggest surprises for me was the set dining schedule. For seasoned river cruisers this is completely normal, but as someone used to the flexibility of ocean cruising, it took some adjusting. On our very first night, we showed up about 30 minutes after the dining room opened, only to find that there were no seats available. Luckily, a few guests happened to be finishing their meals, so we were able to sit shortly after, but it was a quick lesson in how different the dining flow is on a river cruise.

When the dining room opens at 7:30, you really do need to be there on time, ideally a few minutes early. By 7:35, most of the tables are already full. Once we got into the rhythm of arriving promptly, the dining experience was always enjoyable, but it definitely took some getting used to compared to the “anytime dining” style of large ocean ships.

Small Issues With Dining

While the food quality on the AmaMagna was consistently excellent and always fresh, there were a few aspects of dining that surprised me. The breakfast menu, for example, had very little variation from day to day. Everything tasted great, but after a week it began to feel a bit repetitive.

Traveling as a group of three also presented some small challenges at mealtimes. Since most tables were set up for pairs or larger groups, it was sometimes tricky to find a spot for just the three of us without being seated with other passengers. While this often led to friendly conversations, it was something I had not anticipated.

The Al Fresco restaurant, though a wonderful concept, also felt undersized for the number of guests onboard. On one lunch visit, the restaurant was completely full right at opening, and we were only seated because staff moved a table toward the entrance to accommodate us.

We also saw several groups turned away because there simply was not enough space. From what I have heard, Ama plans to expand Al Fresco on the AmaMagna’s upcoming sister ship, the AmaRudi, which should help address this issue in the future.

Would I Do a River Cruise Again?

The short answer is yes. In fact, when I stepped off the AmaMagna at the end of the week, the first thing I said was, “After spending a week on the AmaMagna, I think I’m addicted to river cruising.”

The experience was truly wonderful from start to finish. Everything from the dining to the crew to the time spent in port exceeded my expectations. Visiting these destinations was a first for me, and it felt so special to see these regions up close in such an intimate way.

I also came away with a deeper appreciation for the history and culture of the towns and countries along the Danube. Each stop offered something new, and the way AmaWaterways brought the destinations to life made the trip feel enriching as well as enjoyable.

It is safe to say this will not be my last river cruise!

Who Is a River Cruise For?

River cruising is best suited for travelers who value destination-focused and enriching experiences over nonstop entertainment or nightlife. If you are looking for a party or “booze cruise” atmosphere, this is not the right fit. Instead, river cruises are all about connecting with the culture, history, and scenery of the places you visit.

Sailing with AmaWaterways also requires a certain level of mobility. While the ships are very comfortable, you do need to be able to walk and climb stairs, especially since there is no elevator to access the top deck. Many European ports also have cobblestone streets, hills, and steps, which can be challenging if you have limited mobility.

That being said, AmaWaterways creates a very warm and inviting atmosphere. As long as you are open and friendly, you can expect the same in return from fellow cruisers and crew members. This makes it a great option for couples, groups of friends, solo travelers, and even families with adult children who want a balance of relaxation, culture, and activity.

River cruising is also a fantastic choice for those who appreciate a slower pace of travel without sacrificing comfort. Instead of unpacking and repacking in every city, you can settle into your cabin and wake up in a new destination each day.
