Aboard Zuiderdam’s “Voyage of the Vikings: Solar Eclipse” cruise, guests will be joined by Boston University Professor Meers Oppenheim. Sailing July 18, 2026, roundtrip from Boston on a 35-day itinerary, or as an 18-day segment from Rotterdam to Boston, the Zuiderdam will position off the coast of Iceland in the eclipse’s path of totality.

Professor Oppenheim, an expert in solar plasmas, meteor physics, and ionospheric phenomena, has been teaching and conducting research for more than 25 years. His lectures will make astronomy accessible and engaging for all guests, regardless of prior knowledge.

Oosterdam: Mediterranean Solar Eclipse

The “Mediterranean Solar Eclipse” cruise aboard Oosterdam will welcome Professor Adam Burgasser from the University of California San Diego. Departing August 9, 2026, from Lisbon and sailing to Piraeus (Athens), the Oosterdam will be perfectly placed off the coast of Spain for optimal eclipse viewing.

Dr. Burgasser is an award-winning astrophysicist whose work focuses on the lowest-mass stars, brown dwarfs, and exoplanets. He will not only explain the mechanics of the solar eclipse but will also explore the fascinating intersections between astronomy and Mediterranean history during his lectures.

Nieuw Statendam’s “Legendary Solar Eclipse with Greenland and Scotland” cruise will feature Tom Vassos, an accomplished science communicator and former professor at the University of Toronto. This 28-day voyage departs June 24, 2026, roundtrip from Dover, England, and will also be positioned off Iceland in the path of totality on eclipse day.

Vassos, a member of the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada and founder of Cosmologists Without Borders, is known for bringing complex astronomical concepts to life for audiences around the world.

Additional Enrichment and Special Experiences

In addition to expert-led lectures and Q&A sessions, guests on these sailings will receive specialized solar viewing glasses for safe observation and enjoy real-time commentary during the eclipse. Themed activities and culinary events will add to the excitement, creating a truly immersive experience.

A Rare Opportunity at Sea

Joe Chantry, Holland America Line’s Vice President of Entertainment and Enrichment, says the goal is to offer more than just an extraordinary view. “By welcoming three distinguished astronomy experts aboard, we are offering our guests not only front-row seats to a rare phenomenon, but also the opportunity to deepen their understanding in an enriching setting,” he explains.

Whether you are an avid stargazer or simply intrigued by one of nature’s most breathtaking spectacles, these special 2026 voyages promise a once-in-a-lifetime experience, combining the romance of cruising with the wonder of the cosmos.
