15 Things You Need to Know Before Your First Disney Cruise

15 Things You Need to Know Before Your First Disney Cruise

Sharing is caring!

I’ve been cruising for over 20 years and sailed on just about every major cruise line you can think of. I thought I knew what to expect stepping onboard Disney Cruise Line. Spoiler alert: I didn’t.

Disney Cruise Line does a lot of things differently, and not just in obvious, character-filled ways. From onboard routines and dining quirks to pricing details and surprisingly grown-up perks, cruising with Disney feels familiar… and completely different at the same time.

Whether you’re a Disney superfan, a cruise veteran like me, or somewhere in between, these are the most important things cruisers should know before sailing with Disney Cruise Line, especially if it’s your first time. With that said, here are 15 things you need to know before taking a Disney cruise.

15 Things You Need to Know Before A Disney Cruise

1. Disney Offers Rotational Dining

Disney offers something called rotational dining, where you move between three main dining rooms throughout your cruise while your serving team comes with you each night. It is a unique setup that gives you different themed restaurants without losing the comfort of familiar service.

One of the biggest perks is how quickly your servers pick up on your preferences, from how you like your coffee to any dietary needs, which makes each evening feel more personalized.

It also benefits the crew. Our waitress joked that she was grateful not to be stationed in the same venue every night because she would have to listen to the same music and watch the same dinner show over and over again.

2. Pirate Night Is a Big Deal

Pirate Night is a big deal on Disney cruises, and I honestly wasn’t prepared for how seriously people take it. Guests show up in full pirate costumes, families coordinate outfits, and the energy around the ship feels like a themed event at a park. It’s genuinely fun to see everyone leaning into the spirit of it.

The festivities continue with an impressive pirate deck party, and the night ends with fireworks at sea, which is something Disney is uniquely known for and absolutely worth experiencing.

3. Disney Theming Is Everywhere

One thing that surprised me is just how immersive the theming is on a Disney cruise. It’s not just the characters or the shows. It’s absolutely everywhere you go.

You’ll notice it in the artwork that lines the hallways, staterooms, and staircases, with so many unique details.

You’ll see it in the menus, where food and cocktails are inspired by Disney films and characters, often with clever names or storytelling elements woven right in. You’ll hear it in the music throughout the ship, which shifts from classic Disney songs to instrumental arrangements depending on the venue and time of day.

Even the elevators get in on the fun. Instead of a standard ding, you hear Mickey and Minnie’s voices announcing the floors. It’s small, but it’s one of those moments that makes you smile every time.

Overall, Disney leans into its brand in a way that feels intentional and surprisingly charming!

4. There are Adult Only Areas

Even though Disney Cruise Line is designed with families in mind, there are some genuinely lovely adult only spaces where you can escape the noise and recharge. On Disney Destiny, the Adult Cove became one of my favourite quiet spots onboard.

It has comfortable lounge seating, a peaceful atmosphere, and on most days, absolutely no music. After being in the energy of the main pool deck, stepping into this area felt like walking into a calm bubble.

I am sure it gets livelier at certain times, but during our cruise it was a sanctuary. If you’re an adult sailing Disney for the first time, it is good to know that you really can find a tranquil corner of the ship just for grown-ups.

5. The Food is Phenomenal

One thing that genuinely surprised me on Disney Destiny was how outstanding the food was. Even though Disney is known as a family friendly cruise line, the quality of the included dining really stood out.

The buffet had great variety, the main dining rooms served consistently delicious meals, and even the casual grab and go spots offered high quality options.

It never felt like Disney cut corners just because the ship caters to families. Every meal felt thoughtfully prepared, flavorful, and honestly better than what I have had on many other cruise lines over the years.

6. Do Not Miss The Shows

Disney genuinely has some of the best entertainment at sea, and skipping the shows would be a huge mistake. The production quality is incredibly high, with impressive effects, talented performers and stories that appeal to both kids and adults.

On my sailing, I watched Frozen and Hercules, and both were fantastic. They were fun, emotional and honestly on par with what you would expect in a professional theater.

In addition to the main productions, there are comedy shows, including themed ones like the Marvel comedy show we had onboard, along with live music throughout the ship. It is one of the areas where Disney truly shines, so make room in your schedule for everything you can.

7. Disney Cruise Lines is Great For Multi-Generational Families

Disney may be known for being incredible for kids, but what surprised me is just how well they balance the experience for adults too, which makes it a fantastic option for multi-generational families.

The dining rooms offer menus that appeal to both picky eaters and food-loving adults. The theater shows are family friendly, yet they still feel elevated enough that adults genuinely enjoy them.

There are also 18+ comedy shows and lounges for grownups who want something a little different in the evening.

Furthermore, Disney’s kids clubs are some of the best at sea, giving parents or grandparents a chance to relax and enjoy time on their own while the kids are completely absorbed in amazing activities.

All of this makes sailing with Disney a really easy choice if your group spans multiple ages and interests.

8. The Cabins are Perfect For Families

One thing Disney does exceptionally well is designing cabins that actually work for families. The split bathroom layout is a game changer, giving you a sink and toilet in one room and a sink with a bathtub in the other.

This makes getting ready so much easier, especially with younger kids who need a real tub. The sleeping setup is just as thoughtful. Many cabins include a Murphy bed, a pull-down bunk, or both, so everyone has their own space without feeling cramped.

Storage is smartly designed, too, with plenty of nooks to tuck things away. Overall, the cabins feel comfortable, functional, and genuinely family friendly in a way that surprised me in the best possible way.

9. Disney Cruise Line Visits Some Amazing Destinations

A lot of people think the ship is the whole experience on a Disney cruise, and honestly, the ships are incredible. However, Disney Cruise Line also sails to some truly amazing destinations that add so much to the vacation.

They visit classic Caribbean and Bahamian ports, including Disney’s private islands, Disney Castaway Cay and Disney Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point. These are often considered highlights of the cruise.

Disney also sails to Alaska with glacier viewing, scenic cruising, wildlife tours and family friendly adventures you cannot get anywhere else. In Europe, Disney offers Mediterranean, Greek Isles, Northern Europe and British Isles itineraries, which combine Disney service with bucket list ports.

So while the ships are wonderful, Disney’s itinerary options are far more diverse than many people expect.

10. There Is No Beverage Package On Disney

One thing that surprised me as a first–time Disney cruiser is that Disney Cruise Line does not offer a traditional beverage package like most other cruise lines. Instead, everything is pay as you go.

Soft drinks are complimentary at the pool deck fountain machines, and sodas are also included in the main dining rooms, which is something families really appreciate. Coffee, tea and water are available throughout the ship as well, so you never feel stuck buying drinks you don’t need.

If you enjoy specialty coffees, smoothies, mocktails or cocktails, those are individually priced. Disney also sells wine by the bottle at dinner and allows you to bring a limited amount of wine or beer onboard, which many cruisers use as a money-saving option.

It’s a different system compared to the typical “buy a package and forget about it,” but once you get used to it, it can actually save you money because you’re only paying for what you really want.

11. Kids Clubs Are Next Level On Disney Cruises (And Included)

One of the biggest surprises for me was just how incredible Disney’s kids clubs are. These aren’t simple playrooms. They are full themed worlds where children can walk right into their favorite stories, create crafts, play interactive games, meet characters, and even take part in supervised activities that feel more like mini-adventures than childcare.

The best part is that access to these clubs is included, which is a huge perk for families. Parents can enjoy some guilt-free downtime knowing their kids are having an amazing time with trained counselors and truly immersive spaces.

Disney separates clubs by age, so everything feels just right for each group, from toddlers to tweens.

12. Disney Offers Specialty Dining

Disney may be known for incredible included meals, but they also offer specialty dining options that are absolutely worth considering if you want something a little more elevated. These venues are designed for a quieter, more upscale experience, often focusing on gourmet ingredients and beautiful presentation.

Depending on the ship, you’ll find adult-only restaurants like Palo or Enchanté by Chef Arnaud Lallement, which serve multi-course meals in intimate settings. Prices vary, but the atmosphere and service genuinely feel special and make for an amazing date night or celebratory dinner.

Specialty dining is also a great chance to enjoy a slower, more refined meal away from the busy main dining rooms. Since Disney’s service is so consistent, you can expect the same attention to detail here, just with a more curated menu and elevated ingredients.

If your sailing has a sea day brunch at Palo, snag it early. It’s one of those “even if you’re not a foodie, you’ll appreciate this” experiences.

13. Private Islands are a Major Highlight

One thing Disney Cruise Line absolutely excels at is its private island experience, and it quickly became one of my favorite parts of the trip. Most Disney itineraries include either Disney Castaway Cay or the brand new Disney Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point, and they are truly destinations in themselves.

These islands are beautifully designed, easy to navigate, and packed with amenities that appeal to both families and adults.

You’ll find gorgeous beaches, calm swimming areas, complimentary beach BBQ lunches, and plenty of loungers so you never feel crowded. There are also fun extras like water play areas, snorkeling lagoons, bike rentals, and unique island entertainment that you simply won’t find elsewhere.

What surprised me most was how relaxed and organized the entire experience felt. It has the same polished feel as a Disney theme park, but with the pace and serenity of a beach day. If your itinerary includes one of Disney’s private islands, make no mistake, it will likely be a highlight of your cruise.

14. Room Service Is Awesome (And Included)

One of the perks that genuinely surprised me on Disney Cruise Line is how good the room service is, especially considering that it is included in your cruise fare. Whether you want a relaxed morning on your balcony or a late-night snack after a show, the menu has plenty of great options that arrive quickly and beautifully prepared.

Two items became instant favorites for me. The cheese plate was shockingly good, with a nice variety and perfect for snacking while getting ready for dinner.

As for the fresh donuts? Absolutely delicious. They arrived fresh, soft and honestly better than I expected from complimentary room service.

If you enjoy a slow morning, an afternoon treat or a cozy night in your cabin, take full advantage of this. It feels like such a luxury without the extra cost, and it’s one of those Disney touches that makes the cruise feel extra special.

15. Disney Cruise Line is Not For Everyone

As much as I genuinely enjoyed my Disney cruise experience, it’s fair to say it won’t be the right fit for every cruiser. If you aren’t a Disney fan or don’t enjoy Disney movies, characters, or themed entertainment, a big part of the onboard magic may not land for you.

You also have to be comfortable cruising alongside a lot of families. Disney does an incredible job creating beautiful spaces and offering great service, but it is still a family-forward cruise line.

That means you’ll likely hear crying babies in the dining room, excited little ones in the hallways, and plenty of kid energy throughout the ship.

For many guests, that’s part of the charm. However, if you’re looking for a quiet, adults-only vibe from morning to night, there are other cruise lines that will suit you better.

Disney is fantastic, but it shines brightest for those who either love the brand or embrace the family atmosphere that comes with it.
