I’ve taken nearly 50 cruises over the years, but somehow I had never sailed with Disney. Honestly, at 25, I wasn’t sure if a Disney cruise was really “for me.” I always assumed it was geared more toward families with young kids, and I figured I might feel a little out of place.
However, when Disney launched their newest ship, Disney Destiny, curiosity got the best of me. I kept hearing how incredible the food was, how immersive the themed spaces were, and how Disney does cruising differently from everyone else!
As a foodie and a longtime cruiser, I wanted to see if it actually lived up to the hype.
So when Disney gave me the opportunity to experience their newest ship, I knew I had to see what it was all about. A brand-new vessel, fresh concepts, and the promise of that signature Disney magic felt like the perfect chance to finally give it a try.
With that said, here was my experience onboard Disney Destiny.
We were hosted by Disney Cruise Line on this cruise, however all opinions are my own.
About Disney Destiny

Disney Destiny is the newest ship in the Disney Cruise Line fleet, and it brings a fresh “Heroes and Villains” theme to the seas with spaces inspired by Disney, Pixar, and Marvel stories.
Coming in at roughly 144,000 gross tons and accommodating about 4,000 guests at full capacity, it’s a large and modern cruise ship with more than 1,200 staterooms and a wide variety of dining venues, lounges, and entertainment spaces.
Designed as a fully immersive, story-driven experience, Disney Destiny blends the fun and creativity Disney is known for with the style and amenities of a contemporary mega-ship.
First Impressions of Disney Destiny
Embarkation Experience
The Disney Cruise Line experience truly begins the moment you arrive at the port. After checking in and going through security, you’re greeted with a photo opportunity area where families can take embarkation photos before even stepping aboard.
From there, you enter through a Mickey-shaped doorway, which is a cute, nostalgic touch that instantly makes you feel like you’re stepping into a Disney story rather than just another cruise terminal.
As you walk up the gangway and onto the ship, Disney crew members announce your arrival by name and clap you onboard. This was the first time we’d ever experienced anything like that on any of our nearly 50 cruises, and it genuinely felt special.
I can only imagine how magical that moment must feel if you’re a kid! It’s a warm, memorable welcome and such a fun way to start the cruise.
The Atrium and Ship Design

The moment we stepped into the atrium, it felt fresh and modern with a stylish design and several Disney touches throughout. The space is unique because it can transform throughout the day for character meet and greets and special moments.
As we boarded, Spider-Man was waving to guests, which was such a fun way to start the cruise.
As for the ship itself, the flow is great with several entertainment venues, themed bars, dining areas and more. It surprised me because it still felt like a cruise ship, but the theming is so well done that you can easily get lost in the world of Disney at times.
It was truly impressive and like nothing I have ever experienced on a cruise.
Overall Vibe Onboard
Disney Destiny has a very family friendly atmosphere, but in a way that feels welcoming rather than overwhelming. The crew is incredibly warm, kind and helpful.
In fact, it was one of the best crews I have ever experienced on a cruise. I could easily see how supportive they would be for families with young kids, especially those who are new to cruising and still trying to find their bearings.
The guests onboard also add to the fun. People are friendly, enthusiastic and fully embrace the Disney theme. You will see Mickey ears, Disney merch and even costumes at times.
I really appreciated how Disney Cruise Line manages to bring out the inner child in everyone. Even as a first time Disney cruiser, it was impossible not to get swept up in the playful, lighthearted energy of the ship.
Stateroom and Cabin Experience

On Disney Destiny, we stayed in a Deluxe Family Verandah stateroom. This cabin can accommodate up to five guests, and it felt really spacious.
There was plenty of storage, a large and comfortable couch and a beautiful balcony that made the space feel even bigger.
One of our favorite features was the double bathroom setup. You get one bathroom with a toilet and sink, and a separate bathroom with a shower and sink. This made getting ready so much easier, especially if you are traveling with a group or a family.
Another useful feature is the bathtub, which I know many families with younger kids will really appreciate.
The Disney touches throughout the cabin were also a highlight. From the Disney towels and hand soap to the bedding and subtle Mickey silhouettes in the carpet, the room had plenty of charm without feeling too over the top. Even the artwork was Disney themed, adding to the fun and thoughtful design.

Dining on Disney Destiny
Rotational Dining Explained
Disney Cruise Line uses a rotational dining system, which means you rotate through different main dining rooms each night while your serving team follows you. This gives you a chance to experience several themed restaurants during your cruise without losing the personal service and consistency you get from having the same waitstaff.
On Disney Destiny, the main restaurants include Pride Lands, 1923, and World of Marvel. You are assigned a rotation that takes you through each one.
Pride Lands: Feast of The Lion King

Pride Lands was our first dinner onboard. The theming was impressive and the overall concept is fun, but the food felt a little underwhelming. This may be because it was the very first night of the cruise on a brand-new ship, and serving food during a dinner show is not easy for any team. Still, it was a visually entertaining experience and the atmosphere alone makes it worth visiting.
1923

1923 was a highlight for us. The food quality was excellent and the menu had a wide variety of high quality dishes. The filet mignon stood out as one of the most memorable items and honestly rivaled what you would get at specialty dining restaurants on other cruise lines.
The restaurant also has a warm, elegant design inspired by the golden age of animation, which gives it a more upscale feel.
World of Marvel

We did not get the chance to dine at World of Marvel, but we toured the venue and it looked very cool. Fans of Marvel will love the interactive elements and themed design, and from what we saw, it is one of the most immersive dining spaces on the ship.
Palo Steakhouse

Palo was easily the best food I have ever had on a cruise ship. The menu features a mix of Italian dishes and high end steaks, and it feels designed with foodies in mind.
The Caprese salad, Agnolotti, and Wagyu steak were standout dishes and the entire experience felt elevated. If you enjoy specialty dining, Palo is a must.
Casual Dining: Marceline Market and Festival of Foods
For breakfast and lunch, we really enjoyed Marceline Market, the ship’s buffet. The food variety was solid and everything felt fresh. Classic Disney touches, like the famous Mickey waffles at breakfast, added to the fun.
Throughout the day, Mickey and Friends Festival of Foods was perfect for quick bites. It has several small stations offering tacos, burgers, barbecue, and other casual items. It is an easy option when you want something fast while you are out enjoying the ship.
Entertainment and Activities
Theater Shows

This is where Disney truly shines. The theater shows onboard Disney Destiny were phenomenal. During our cruise, we saw Hercules and Frozen, and both completely redefined what I thought was possible on a cruise ship stage.
The singing was incredible, the stories were classics and the production quality was out of this world. I am not usually a huge fan of theater shows, but these were genuinely enjoyable and absolutely worth attending.
Character Experiences

A standout part of the Disney experience is the character interactions. You can be walking around the ship and suddenly run into your favorite Disney character.
What impressed me the most was how perfectly they stayed in character every single time. It is obviously amazing for kids, but honestly, it is just as fun for adults. These spontaneous moments add so much personality to the cruise.
Pirates Night and Deck Party
One of the biggest highlights of our cruise was Pirates Night. After dinner, there is a huge deck party featuring a live band, talented dancers and special effects that bring the whole theme to life.
The night finishes with fireworks at sea, which was such a magical moment. Disney is the only cruise line that still offers fireworks onboard, and it is definitely something you do not want to miss.
Adult Only Spaces

Disney Destiny has several amazing adult only spaces that go beyond what you typically find on a family focused cruise line. The Haunted Mansion Parlor felt like stepping right into the movie, with detailed theming and a spooky fun atmosphere that made it one of the most memorable venues onboard.
De Vil’s offered a surprise appearance from Cruella De Vil, adding a theatrical twist that guests absolutely loved. Saga featured a Marvel comedy show that was unique, clever and surprisingly funny.
If you want a break from the Disney theme, The Rose is an elevated bar with beautiful ocean views and a relaxing, classy atmosphere. Together, these venues create a perfect balance for adults who want both immersive themed entertainment and more refined, quiet moments.
Pool Deck and Outdoor Spaces
Main Pool Deck

Disney Destiny has a fantastic main pool deck with several pools and a giant screen that plays Disney classics throughout the day. It creates a fun, upbeat atmosphere that families will love.
There is also a small splash park for younger children along with a kid friendly water slide, making the whole area lively and engaging.
AquaMouse Slide

One of the coolest features of the outdoor spaces is the AquaMouse slide. I had the chance to try it, and it did not disappoint.
It blends Disney theming with a fun, fast waterslide in a way I have never seen on a cruise ship. If you enjoy waterslides, this one is definitely worth checking out.
Quiet Cove (Adult Only)

What surprised me the most about the outdoor spaces was how nice the adult only areas were. The Quiet Cove felt elevated and peaceful with comfortable lounge chairs, an infinity pool and its own bar.
There was no Disney music or any music at all in this area, which created a relaxing escape when you needed a break from the action. The Cove Cafe is also located here, and it is a great spot to enjoy a coffee in total silence.
For a cruise line that is so family focused, it was great to see that Disney still offers quiet, relaxing spaces where adults can unwind and enjoy a peaceful moment at sea.
Service and Disney Hospitality
The crew onboard Disney Destiny was incredibly friendly. Everyone we interacted with, from the waitstaff to the shop employees to the team at guest services, was consistently kind, accommodating and helpful.
It was seriously impressive and you can tell that Disney puts a lot of effort into their training and overall guest experience. The level of hospitality felt thoughtful and genuine, and it added so much to the overall cruise.
Who Disney Destiny Is (and Isn’t) For

Who It Is For
Disney Destiny is an ideal choice for families, especially multigenerational groups with young children. The combination of Disney themed entertainment, incredible shows, character meet and greets and a variety of adult only spaces makes it a great option for guests of all ages.
The kids clubs onboard are truly next level. We had the chance to tour them, and I was seriously impressed. The spaces are modern, creative and so well designed that it genuinely made me wish I had experienced a Disney cruise when I was younger.
Disney Destiny is also perfect for Disney fans. If you love visiting the Disney parks, you will feel right at home on the ship. The storytelling, theming and energetic atmosphere that people love about the parks continues seamlessly at sea.
Who It Is Not For
If you do not like Disney, there is a good chance you will not enjoy this cruise. The Disney theme is present everywhere onboard. The artwork in your cabin, the voices in the elevators, the music around the ship and even the small details all reflect classic Disney characters and stories.
You do not have to be a Disney super fan to have a great time, but you do need to at least appreciate or tolerate the overall theme. If that is not your style, this may not be the best cruise line for you.
How Disney Cruise Line Compares to Other Premium Lines
Disney Cruise Line definitely feels elevated in many ways. The entertainment, dining and overall atmosphere are high quality, and in several areas Disney actually exceeds what many premium lines offer.
However, because the brand is so family focused, you should expect a large number of young families onboard. This means that while the experience is premium, the environment will still reflect the presence of children.
It is reasonable to expect moments like a child crying at a nearby table during dinner or hearing noise during a theater show. Personally, this does not bother me, but I can see how it could make the atmosphere feel less elevated compared to premium lines that attract mostly adults.
The best way to describe Disney Cruise Line is as a premium, family friendly cruise line. Think of it as a more upscale version of what you would find on NCL, Carnival or Royal Caribbean.
It offers great quality, thoughtful design and standout entertainment, but the demographic onboard is very different from what you would see on Princess or Celebrity.
If you enjoy a premium experience with a fun, energetic family atmosphere, Disney fits that category perfectly. If you prefer a quieter, more adult oriented cruise, you may find those other lines a better match.

My Experience With Disney Cruise Line

I really enjoyed my time on Disney Destiny and was pleasantly surprised by how much I connected with the overall experience. Some of the biggest highlights for me were the food onboard, especially Palo Steakhouse, the incredible Hercules and Frozen theater shows and the fun, energetic vibe throughout the ship.
As someone who went in not really knowing what to expect, I can completely understand why Disney has earned such a positive reputation.
This cruise felt different from other mainstream cruise lines in the best way. Even though Disney and Virgin Voyages could not be more different in theme, both offer something truly unique at sea. Virgin stands out because it breaks the mold, and Disney does the same in its own way.
The creative comedy shows, characters roaming the ship and themed venues that make you feel like you are stepping into an actual movie set all create an experience that you simply cannot find anywhere else.
Would I Sail Disney Again?
Yes, I would definitely sail with Disney again. They create a fun and memorable vacation filled with great service, great food and a strong sense of storytelling.
After spending three days onboard, I still feel like I barely scratched the surface. There is so much more to explore and I find myself more interested in Disney Cruise Line than ever. They do an amazing job at bringing out your inner child and making the onboard experience feel magical from start to finish.
