Our First River Cruise: What it’s Really Like Sailing with AmaWaterways

Sharing is caring!

Thinking about a European river cruise but not sure if it’s right for you? Before sailing with AmaWaterways aboard AmaMagna, we had a few questions and preconceived notions of our own. In fact, I wasn’t entirely sure river cruising was for us.

I imagined quiet days gliding past small towns, slower-paced tours and excursions, and maybe a more mature crowd than we were used to. After years of ocean cruising, I wondered if we’d miss the energy and variety that big ships bring.

However, sailing the Danube on AmaWaterways AmaMagna completely changed my perspective. This journey blended everything I love about travel, from beautiful scenery and incredible food to warm service and meaningful experiences, all wrapped in the ease and comfort that river cruising is known for.

In this review, I’ll share what surprised us most, what stood out, and the little details that made this one of the most memorable trips we’ve ever taken. Whether you’re a first-time river cruiser or an ocean cruise loyalist who’s curious about trying something new, here’s what it’s really like to explore Europe by river.

Disclosure: Our river cruise was hosted by AmaWaterways. However all opinions, impressions, and experiences shared here are entirely my own.

About Our Ship: AmaMagna

Ama Waterways AmaMagna is not your average river ship. At 72 feet wide, she is nearly twice as wide as most river cruise ships. With 98 staterooms, a maximum capacity of 196 guests, and about 70 crew members, AmaMagna ship felt spacious yet intimate.

Our mid-August sailing had about 164 passengers onboard, which created a relaxed and comfortable atmosphere. The cruise began in Vilshofen, Germany and ended in Budapest, Hungary, a classic seven night Danube River cruise itinerary.

Pre-Cruise in Munich

If you have followed me for a while, you know that I always recommend flying into your cruise port at least one or two days early, and a river cruise is no different. Giving yourself that buffer not only helps with jet lag, it also ensures you do not risk missing the ship due to unexpected flight delays.

For this trip, we chose to fly into Munich 2 days before our cruise began. Arriving early gave us time to adjust to the time zone and explore at a relaxed pace. From sampling schnitzel and sausages to soaking up the lively atmosphere at the Hofbräuhaus, Munich made for a perfect starting point!

We also browsed local shops, explored the Munich Cathedral (Frauenkirche), and watched the Glockenspiel chime in the town square. It was a fun and memorable way to begin our river cruise adventure.

AmaWaterways arranged our transfer to Vilshofen on embarkation day, which made things very convenient. We had a comfortable 90 minute ride by coach bus to the ship.

During the bus ride, an AmaWaterways representative was onboard, sharing helpful information about the cruise and the region as we made our way to Vilshofen.

Embarkation and First Impressions

Boarding AmaMagna was a seamless experience from start to finish. Check in was quick and stress free, and within minutes of arriving our luggage had already been delivered to our stateroom.

The ease of boarding was something I hadn’t expected, and it was just one of the things I appreciated about our river cruise experience. This really set the tone for the level of service we would come to expect throughout the week.

With our key cards in hand, we were excited to explore the ship and gather our first impressions. The sundeck was the first stop, and it really impressed us with its variety of spaces.

There’s a small pool and hot tub, a jogging track, a pickleball court that would become surprisingly popular during the cruise, and even a small herb garden! In addition there was a lot of seating spread out, which ended up being wonderful during the days to follow as we sailed along the Danube and the Wachau Valley.

Ama Magna lounge

Inside, AmaMagna continued to shine. The lobby was bright and welcoming, with elegant yet comfortable decor. The main lounge, where many daily activities and evening entertainment take place, was wide and spacious. In additional, smaller more intimate seating could be found 2 other lounges, and a cinema.

We also took a peek at the dining venues, including the spacious main dining room and the inviting Al Fresco restaurant at the front of the ship. Every corner we explored left us with a great first impression.

At 4 decks, AmaMagna has a fitness center, self service laundry facilities, and an onboard shop. While it’s a small ship compared to the large ocean cruise ships we’ve been on, it really had everything we needed.

Welcome Reception

That evening, passengers were invited to a welcome reception in the lounge, where we met the cruise manager, hotel director, captain, and members of the crew. It was a warm and friendly introduction that helped us feel at home on board.

Oktoberfest

Shortly after, we were treated to an Oktoberfest celebration held right at the dock in Vilshofen. Guests were welcomed with beer (or wine if you preferred), along with fresh pretzels, lively music, and even a bit of dancing. There were also some friendly games, including a beer holding competition.

It was a fun and festive way to kick off our Danube River cruise!

Our Staterooms

We stayed in a balcony cabin (Category SB) on Deck 2. At 355 square feet, it was both comfortable and spacious. It had a beautiful living area with a full size couch, small coffee tables, and a desk.

There was so much storage space in this cabin! I’m an overpacker and could not fill each shelf and drawer. In addition to closets, there were several deep drawers along the wall under the TV. It really did help to keep everything organized and in it’s place.

Ama Magna balcony cabin bathroom

Highlights of our balcony cabin included a nice size bathroom, with double sinks and a spacious shower with a glass door. There was also a separate toilet room off the front entry to the cabin.

Our cabin had a nice size balcony with 2 chairs and a small coffee table. Our cabin was on deck 2, which meant our balcony was quite close to the water. We often sat out with a coffee in the morning or afternoon, and it was so serene.

Fixed Window Stateroom

Ama Magna fixed window cabin

Ethan had a fixed window stateroom, often referred to as a “swan view”. While more budget friendly, the cabin was still roomy, with a comfortable bed, lots of storage, a nice desk area, and a beautiful bathroom with a glass shower door.

Grand Suite

We later toured a Grand Suite, which was both luxurious and beautiful. The bed faces the balcony window, as does a seating area, for perfect river views! The bathroom, with a stand-alone bathtub was a highlight!

Dining on AmaMagna

One of the most pleasant surprises onboard was the dining experience, both during the evening and day. Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner are included, as well as light bites in the evening.

AmaMagna has four dining venues:

Ama Magna dining
  • Main Dining Room a rotating menu with regional specialties and classic options, and our favorite overall. Some dishes we really enjoyed include the salmon and lamb chops.
  • Jimmy’s a family style venue serving the same menu as the dining room. We sat with another family we met onboard, and the shared plates and conversation was enjoyable.
  • Chef’s Table a multi course tasting menu experience. The Chef’s Table menu included a delicious ravioli among it’s dishes. It was so good that I still think about it!
  • Al Fresco a casual restaurant at the bow, perfect for meals with a view. For lunch, we enjoyed some pretty good burgers, although the pizza was just fair.

Dinner is served at the same time for everyone, typically 7:00 or 7:30 pm. There are several tables for 2 or 4, which gave us an option to dine our own party or join others.

Breakfast

We always ate breakfast in the dining room, although there was also a light breakfast available in Al Fresco as well.

The food was very good, with a nice choice of hot breakfast options including Eggs Benedict and Avacodo Tartine (my favorite). We also enjoyed the self-serve buffet with cheese, fresh fruit, smoked salmon and hot breakfast dishes.

Snacks & Special Events

Snacks such as afternoon tea, late night bites, and even surprise buffets, for example an Austrian spread after our Vienna concert, added to the experience.

Beer, Wine and Drinks

Beer and wine are included at meals, and specialty coffees, juices, and soft drinks are available throughout the day.

Before dinner there’s a Sip & Sail hour with select complimentary cocktails, as well as beer and wine. This was a really pleasant time to unwind after a busy day on land before dinner.

Outside of Sip & Sail, the bar offers a full menu of drinks to purchase, including cocktails, spirits, liqueurs, wine and beer.

Activities Onboard

Daytime on a river cruise is less about shipboard entertainment and more about the scenery. Sailing past castles, abbeys, and through locks is an experience in itself.

That said, AmaMagna offered plenty of activities like:

  • Wellness classes and a fitness center
  • Pickleball, which was very popular
  • Strudel making demos and craft workshops
  • Photo and excursion talks

Activities onboard AmaMagna were varied and engaging, with something for everyone to enjoy. I joined one of the arts and crafts sessions, where we made colorful pop up cards, which turned out to be a relaxing and fun way to spend part of the afternoon.

Meanwhile, Frank and Ethan took part in the strudel making demonstration, which was both entertaining and delicious.

Beyond the scheduled activities, one of our favorite things to do was simply enjoy the scenic cruising. As we sailed along the Danube, our cruise manager would narrate what we were seeing, pointing out castles, vineyards, and historic landmarks along the way.

Evenings Onboard

Evenings onboard AmaMagna were more lively than we expected! After dinner, the ship’s musical duo performed in the lounge, creating a fun and welcoming atmosphere with live music for dancing and sing alongs.

Some nights also included trivia games or themed events, which encouraged guests to mingle and added variety to the evenings.

What surprised us most was how social the evenings were. Guests of all ages gathered in the lounge to enjoy drinks, conversation, and dancing. It never felt overwhelming, but there was definitely an energy in the room that made it easy to join in.

By around 11:30 pm, things usually began to quiet down. River cruises are not night party cruises, so the atmosphere shifted naturally toward a more relaxed pace, giving everyone a chance to rest up for the next day’s excursions.

Excursions: A New Adventure Every Day (and evening)

Excursions are included in the fare, with 3-4 options per port. This was nice, as every guest can find an excursion that suits their interests and activity level.

Here are some highlights from our trip:

river cruise wachau valley
  • Passau, Germany: We did a walking tour of the City of Three Rivers, while Ethan chose a fortress hike.
  • Linz, Austria: We did a full day excursion to Salzburg with Sound of Music sites, fortress views, and Mozart chocolates. It was amazing and probably our most memorable day.
river cruise salzburg
  • Grein, Austria (Evening Castle Tour): After dinner, joined the optional evening excursion to Greinburg Castle.
  • Melk and Krems/Dürnstein, Austria (Wachau Valley Day): When docked in Melk did a Benedictine Abbey tour and borrowed bicycles for a leisurely bikride along the Danube. In the afternoon we cruised through the Wachau Valley, where we saw vineyards, villages, and storybook scenery.
  • Vienna, Austria: We did a Vienna walking tour, then went on our own to some Jewish heritage sites, and enjoyed an optional Mozart and Strauss concert in the evening. Returning to the ship, we were treated to an Austrian buffet with goulash and sausages.
  • Bratislava, Slovakia: We did a coronation walking tour. This was our least favorite port, but guests on the Taste of Slovakia food tour reported loving it.
  • Budapest, Hungary: Sailing into Budapest was magical, with commentary from our cruise manager. We toured Buda’s historic side and, of course, sampled chimney cakes! We did stay an extra day in Budapest after the cruise, where we toured Pest. This included a moving visit to the Dohány Street Synagogue, the largest in Europe, and the powerful Shoes on the Danube Bank memorial, honoring Holocaust victims.

One of the things we appreciated most about AmaWaterways was the flexibility in excursions. Each day offered a choice between cultural, active, or more leisurely tours, which made the experience unique and adaptable.

river cruise bikes

Since we were traveling with our 25 year old son Ethan, this worked out perfectly. He often opted for the more active bike rides and hikes, while Frank and I preferred the slower paced walking tours.

This way, we could each enjoy the excursions that suited us best, yet still share plenty of experiences together throughout the cruise.

Service and Special Touches

The service throughout our cruise was excellent. Every member of the crew was warm, attentive, and genuinely personable, which made the ship feel welcoming from the very first day.

What really impressed us was how accessible the leadership team was. Both the cruise manager and hotel director were always present in the reception area, ready to answer questions, offer suggestions, or simply chat with guests. It created a very open and approachable atmosphere, which is not always the case on larger ships.

river cruise crew members

It was also the little touches that stood out and made the experience feel special. In our cabin, we found thoughtful amenities such as slippers, robes, and umbrellas for use during the trip. We were also delighted by the complimentary scarves and baseball caps provided to guests, a fun and practical keepsake.

Each evening, a chocolate was placed on our pillows, with the cocoa percentage increasing night by night as a playful detail. At reception, postcards were available, and if you filled them out, the staff would even mail them for you. Small gestures like these, combined with the friendly and attentive crew, made our AmaWaterways cruise memorable!

Who Is a River Cruise For?

Before this trip, we assumed river cruising was mainly for “mature” cruise travelers. We could not have been more wrong. Although the atmosphere onboard is relaxed and refined, the experience is not limited to any one age group.

While this is not a party cruise, we were pleasantly surprised to see a wide mix of guests. There were couples in their 40s and 50s, groups of friends traveling together, multi generational families, and yes, retirees as well.

Most passengers fell into the 50 to 70 age range, but there were younger adults onboard too, including our 25 year old son, Ethan, who found plenty to enjoy.

River cruising with AmaWaterways is especially appealing to active travelers. The included excursions often involve walking tours through charming towns, cycling along river paths, or even hiking up to hilltop fortresses.

For those who prefer a slower pace, there are always gentler options, like guided strolls, panoramic bus tours, or simply staying onboard to enjoy the scenic sailing. The balance of activity and relaxation makes it easy to tailor the experience to your own travel style.

In short, if you love exploring Europe and want a mix of comfort, culture, and ease, a river cruise with AmaWaterways is a fantastic choice. It offers a chance to unpack once, yet see multiple countries and cities, all while enjoying excellent food, attentive service, and a floating boutique hotel atmosphere.

Far from being just for one demographic, river cruising is for curious travelers of any age who want to experience Europe in a meaningful and enjoyable way.

Our first river cruise on AmaMagna was one of the most memorable travel experiences we have had. From the food and service to the excursions and scenery, it felt both enriching and relaxing.
