Recently returning from my fourth Mediterranean cruise onboard Virgin Voyages Scarlet Lady, I’ve gathered some game-changing insights that every Mediterranean cruiser needs to know.
Whether you’re a first-time cruiser or a seasoned sailor, these tips will help you avoid common mistakes and make the most of every magical port.
After four Mediterranean cruise vacations, I’m still discovering new tricks and noticing new details every time the Mediterranean cruise experience continues to evolve, and staying informed can make the difference between a good trip and an unforgettable one.
Plan Your Wardrobe
Invest in Quality Walking Shoes
You’ll be doing serious walking on Mediterranean cobblestones and steep hills. Your feet will thank you for bringing comfortable, non-slip shoes that you’ve already broken in at home. Trust me, discovering blisters on day two in Rome isn’t fun.
Pack Breathable Sandals
Summer Mediterranean weather calls for sandals that let your feet breathe. We found Birkenstock-style sandals on Amazon that worked perfectly for both pre-cruise Barcelona exploration and daily port adventures.
Having versatile footwear saves precious luggage space.
Respect Religious Sites with Proper Attire
Italian churches, especially the Vatican, require covered shoulders and knees for both men and women. Pack a light cardigan, shawl, or scarf that’s easy to carry. This small preparation prevents disappointment when you reach those bucket-list destinations.

Arrive Early for Maximum Enjoyment
Fly In Two Days Before Your Cruise
This isn’t just about avoiding missed sailings due to flight delays. Flying in early gives you time to explore your embarkation city and adjust to the time change properly.
You’ll board your cruise refreshed and ready for adventure instead of exhausted from jet lag.
The extra days also provide a buffer for any travel hiccups. Flight delays and cancellations happen, and having that extra time buffer can save your entire vacation.
Master European Transportation
Use Credit Cards for Taxi Rides
Here’s something that surprised me: when our taxi driver quoted €24 for our ride, I asked him to repeat it. He then asked about payment method, and when we said credit card, the price dropped to €19. Always ask for a receipt, taxi drivers are required to provide them, and it keeps everything legitimate.
Download Essential Apps Before You Go
WhatsApp is an essential app for your shore excursion as guides will likely contact you through it. Also download Google Maps offline for your ports and Google Translate for those language barrier moments.
Book Smart with Reputable Companies
This trip, we tried pre-cruise excursions for the first time, including an incredible tour to Montserrat from Barcelona. Working with established companies often provides better value than cruise line excursions, sometimes up to 40% less expensive.
Small group tours offer personalized experiences where guides can adapt to your interests. Our driver in the French Riviera customized our Monaco and Eze visit perfectly, recommending local restaurants and ensuring we returned to the ship with time to spare.
Look for Multi-Port Package Deals
Many excursion companies offer discounts when you book multiple ports together. These packages often include back-to-ship guarantees for peace of mind.

Money Matters Made Simple
Understand European Payment Culture
Most Mediterranean ports use the euro, so be sure to get some cash before your trip. However, credit cards are widely accepted and often give better exchange rates. When paying by card, always choose to pay in euros rather than converting to your home currency as your credit card company offers better rates.
Tipping is Different Here
The European tipping culture differs significantly from that in North America. At casual restaurants, simply round up to the nearest euro or two. Fine dining establishments typically expect a 5-10% tip for excellent service, but it’s not mandatory, unlike back home.
Watch for service charges already included on your bill, especially in France. Tour guides typically receive €5-10 per person for full-day tours, with €1-2 for drivers.
Navigate Like a Local
Claim Your VAT Refund
Buying something special as a Mediterranean cruise souvenir? You can reclaim about 14% VAT on expensive purchases. Keep your passport handy (or passport photos work too), have the salesperson complete the forms, and process your refund at the airport when you fly home.
Stay Alert in Tourist Areas
Big cities attract pickpockets, but staying aware keeps you safe. Keep your hand on your bag’s zipper, avoid open totes, and politely decline anyone offering bracelets, balloons, or photos, these aren’t free services.
If you see restaurants with pasta being made in the window, locals suggest looking elsewhere. These are often tourist traps with inflated prices and mediocre food.
Sunday Planning is Crucial
Expect Limited Hours on Sundays
Many local shops and restaurants in the Mediterranean open later or remain closed entirely on Sundays. This is especially true in smaller ports where local culture takes precedence over tourism.
Plan accordingly by booking excursions for Sunday port days or researching which attractions remain open.
Essential Practical Tips
Always Carry Small Change
Keep €1-2 coins handy for public restrooms in major cities like Rome. Bus stations and popular tourist areas often charge for facilities, and having exact change saves time and frustration.
Activate Your International Phone Plan
If you’re using an eSIM, download and activate it before leaving home. Having reliable communication in ports provides peace of mind and helps with navigation and translation needs.
Mediterranean Culinary Adventures
Eat Local and Eat Often
Mediterranean port food is surprisingly affordable and absolutely delicious. Italian pizza costs less than you’d expect, and Spanish wine prices will shock you in the best way.
French croissants taste completely different with authentic French butter. Even as someone from Montreal with decent pastries, nothing compares.
Don’t miss the gelato in Italy or fresh focaccia sandwiches with tomatoes. These authentic experiences cost less than ship dining and create lasting memories.
Safety and Scam Awareness
Protect Your Belongings Wisely
Many smart travelers wear phone lanyards or cross-body phone cases in busy ports. Keep bags zipped and held close to your body. Belt bags worn in front allow for easy monitoring while keeping hands free for photos and navigation.
Recognize Common Tourist Scams
Anyone approaching you with “free” items isn’t being generous – they expect payment afterward. This includes bracelet makers, balloon sellers, and people offering to take your photo. A polite “no, thank you” and continued walking usually ends the interaction.
Making the Most of Port Days
Balance Planning with Spontaneity
While Mediterranean cruise planning is essential, leave room for unexpected discoveries. Some of the best experiences come from wandering local neighborhoods and stumbling upon authentic cafes or hidden viewpoints.
Consider Staying Onboard Sometimes
Not every port requires exploration. Sometimes the best choice is enjoying the ship’s amenities while docked.
