12 Things I Wish I Brought on My Caribbean Cruise
1. Water Shoes
On a recent Caribbean cruise, one of my biggest regrets was not packing water shoes. We visited MSC’s Ocean Cay, a stunning private island with beautiful beaches, but I quickly learned that some spots were quite rocky.
My feet (and my husband’s and son’s) could have really used water shoes as I navigated the rocky beach. I’ve had a trusty pair of water shoes for years, and they pack up so flat that there’s really no excuse for not bringing them.
Whether you’re visiting a private island or planning beach excursions, make sure you have water shoes on your list. Trust me, your feet will thank you!
Recommended: Water shoes (check price & see over 100,000 amazon reviews here)
2. A Portable Personal Fan
I didn’t fully appreciate how hot a Caribbean cruise could get in September! It’s much warmer than cruising in January or February, and I found myself really wishing for a portable fan, especially during port days.
I’ve used both handheld personal fans and neck fans before, and both options work great. The neck fan is particularly convenient if you tend to get hot.
If you’re heading somewhere warm, bringing a personal fan can make a big difference in your comfort level.
Recommended: Handheld personal fan (see over 16,000 amazon reviews)
Recommended: Neck fan
3. Change of Clothes for Excursions
This isn’t an item so much as a tip I picked up (unfortunately, the hard way). When you’re heading out on a beach excursion, always pack a change of clothes, including fresh undergarments.
My husband realized the downside of staying in a wet swimsuit all day when we had some post-beach shopping planned. Now, we always take a compression packing cube or even a large Ziploc bag with dry clothes and use another bag for the wet bathing suits.
A little planning goes a long way toward staying comfortable.
Recommended: Compression packing cubes
4. Wet/Dry Bag
I didn’t think of bringing one of these on my last cruise, but I’m definitely adding a wet/dry bag to my packing list!
Wet/dry bags keep your beach gear organized and separate from dry items, making them super handy. If you’re like me and love to travel with pouches and organizers, a wet/dry bag is perfect for keeping things neat.
Recommended: wet/dry bag
5. Microfiber Towels
Heavy, bulky towels from the cruise ship are a hassle to lug around. I noticed a friend brought lightweight, fast-drying microfiber towels for her family, and I immediately saw the benefits.
Microfiber towels are so much easier to carry, and I’m now sold on switching to these for shore excursions and port days.
Recommended: microfiber towels
6. Don’t Forget Sunscreen and Aloe Vera
On my recent Caribbean cruise, I brought sunscreen but forgot aloe vera, and let me tell you, I could’ve used it!
Even when you’re not constantly in the sun, you can still get more exposure than expected. I recommend packing a non-sticky, organic aloe vera gel.
Another item I overlooked was lip balm, and I paid the price (literally). I had to splurge on an expensive lip balm at the onboard shop. Don’t make the same mistake!
Recommended: Aloe vera gel (now in travel size)
7. Beach Bags and Waterproof Pouches
After years of using the same beach bag, I recently upgraded to a new version with plenty of room for all my essentials. This navy stripe beach bag is perfect for carrying items like reusable bottles and towels. But when it comes to valuables, you’ll want extra protection.
Recommended: Zippered beach bag
A waterproof pouch for your phone, cruise card, and cash is a must-have. For added security, you can even go a step further with a lockbox that attaches to your beach chair.

8. Snorkel Gear
Bringing your own snorkel gear can be a smart choice. I didn’t bring mine, but I noticed other cruisers who did.
It’s more sanitary, and you can use it on multiple trips instead of renting gear each time. Plus, it’s a great way to save a little extra money.
Recommended: Snorkel gear
9. Floating Beach Mat/Pool Float
This is an item I hadn’t considered, but after seeing other guests using them, I was intrigued. These floating mats pack flat, inflate quickly, and are great for lounging on the water.
Renting them on the islands can cost around $25, so buying your own could save you some cash over time.
Recommended: floating mats
10. Anti-Chafe Balm
Cruising in a hot climate can mean dealing with chafing, and anti-chafe balm can be a lifesaver. Body Glide anti chafe balm is available for women and men and is particularly useful on hot-weather cruises.
Recommended: Body Glide anti chafe balm
11. Collapsible Sand Toys
For those traveling with kids, collapsible sand toys are a genius idea. They’re easy to pack and store in a mesh bag, making cleanup and transport a breeze.
Recommended: Collapsible sand toys
12. Swimsuit Coverups
A good swimsuit coverup is a must. I love lace coverups, but I also recommend having one with short sleeves if you’re planning to walk around town or explore the ship after a beach day.
