15 Cruise Golden Rules Every Cruiser Should Follow Without Fail

15 Cruise Golden Rules Every Cruiser Should Follow Without Fail

Sharing is caring!

Cruising is one of the best ways to vacation, but just like anything in life, there are a few unspoken rules that make the experience better for everyone. After more than 40 cruises, I’ve learned that these “golden rules” aren’t just about etiquette, they’re about keeping your trip smooth, safe, and enjoyable.

Some of them are common sense, others are lessons learned the hard way, but together they make a big difference.

With that said, here are the 15 golden rules of cruising.

15 Golden Rules of Cruising

1. Always Fly in at Least a Day Before Your Cruise

This is one rule I’ve been preaching forever. Flights get delayed, luggage gets lost, and sometimes things just don’t go as planned. The last thing you want is to watch your ship sail away without you because your plane landed a few hours too late.

Flying in at least a day early gives you peace of mind and starts your vacation stress free. Over the years, I’ve seen people in cruise Facebook groups posting about “how can I catch the ship at the next port?”

Trust me, never want to be in that position!

2. Don’t Skip the Muster Drill

Nowadays, muster drills are quicker and easier than ever. Whether it’s watching a safety video in your cabin or meeting at your muster station, it’s not something you should ever skip.

Years ago, everyone had to stand outside in the heat wearing bright orange lifejackets, shoulder to shoulder with hundreds of other passengers. Compared to that, the new drills are a breeze.

It’s a small but important part of cruising safely. Plus, once you complete the drill, your cruise vacation officially begins!

3. Always Treat the Crew With Respect

Cruise ship crew members work incredibly hard to keep things running smoothly. They often work long contracts that keep them away from home and family for months at a time. While most passengers are relaxing and having fun, the crew is putting in long hours behind the scenes.

Sometimes they have to enforce rules that you might not agree with, whether it’s about safety, food policies, or using certain areas of the ship. It’s important to remember that they didn’t make the rules, but they are responsible for making sure passengers follow them.

Showing frustration or being rude doesn’t help, and it can make a tough job even harder.

On the flip side, small acts of kindness go a long way. A simple thank you, a friendly smile in the hallway, or learning a crew member’s name can brighten their day. I’ve had stewards remember my coffee order every morning, waiters surprise us with extra appetizers when they noticed what we liked, and bartenders who learned our favorite drink by day two.

These are the little touches that make cruising so special, and they’re possible because the crew truly cares.

4. Follow the Onboard Rules

Cruise ships are designed for fun, but they also have to be safe. Climbing on railings, sneaking into restricted areas, or overindulging in alcohol isn’t just frowned upon, it can put you and others at risk.

One of the golden rules of cruising is simple: follow the ship’s policies. It makes the cruise better for everyone and saves crew members from having to clean up (literally and figuratively) after poor behavior.

5. Practice Proper Buffet Etiquette

Buffets are a big part of the cruise experience, and let’s be honest, they can be both a highlight and a bit of a circus. They only work well when everyone remembers basic manners.

Start by washing your hands before you enter. It’s one of the easiest ways to keep everyone healthy on board. When you’re serving yourself, use the utensils provided and never grab food with your fingers, no matter how tempting that cookie tray looks.

Take only what you know you’ll eat. It’s perfectly fine to go back for seconds (or thirds, no judgment here), but piling your plate so high that half goes to waste isn’t a good look. Cutting the line is another big no-no. I get it, everyone wants to get to the soft-serve machine, but patience is part of the unwritten buffet contract.

At the end of the day, the buffet can be one of the most fun parts of cruising, but only if we all do our part to keep it pleasant. A little courtesy goes a long way toward making it enjoyable for everyone.

6. Be on Time for All Aboard

The ship really will leave without you if you’re late. Pier runners might make funny YouTube clips, but trust me, you don’t want to be in that situation.

After sailing on more than 40 cruises, I’ve seen pier runners a handful of times, and I’ve even been on cruises where passengers were left behind in port.

It’s stressful for the late guests, and honestly, it’s stressful for the rest of us watching from our balconies or the pier. Always allow yourself plenty of time to get back onboard, especially in ports where you’re exploring on your own.

The rule of thumb is simple: be early, not last-minute!

7. Don’t Hog Lounge Chairs

If you’re not actively using a chair, don’t leave a towel, flip flops, or a random paperback on it for six hours. Chair hogging is the number one cruise pet peeve, and it’s not just rude, it’s inconsiderate to everyone else who wants to enjoy the pool deck.

It’s important to remember that cruising is a shared experience with thousands of other passengers, so the sun loungers aren’t “yours” to claim all day. Use the chair while you’re swimming, reading, or relaxing, but if you’re heading off to lunch or an activity, free it up for someone else.

8. Respect Balcony Etiquette

Balconies are a wonderful private space, but they come with some unwritten rules. Keep the noise down so your neighbors can enjoy the sound of the ocean too.

Never smoke on your balcony since most North American cruise lines prohibit it and it is a fire hazard that creates an unpleasant experience for others. Instead, go to the designated smoking areas onboard the cruise ship.

Furthermore, don’t ever toss anything overboard. It may seem like no big deal, but it’s dangerous for the environment and could even lead to fines.

Finally, remember that peeking onto your neighbor’s balcony isn’t polite. Respect the privacy of those around you just as you’d want them to respect yours.

9. Use Elevators Considerately

Elevators on cruise ships can get crowded, especially on sea days or right after shows. A little courtesy goes a long way. Let people off before you get on, don’t push your way to the front.

If you’re only going up one deck and are able-bodied, consider taking the stairs. It’s healthier for you and frees up space for others who need the elevator more.

Finally, if you see someone with mobility issues or pushing a stroller, be kind and let them on first. A bit of patience makes everyone’s day smoother.

10. Practice Pool and Hot Tub Courtesy

Pools and hot tubs are popular spots on any cruise ship, but they’re not your personal space. If you have kids, don’t let them use it unsupervised, and always make sure they’re following the posted rules.

If you need to use the washroom, leave the pool or hot tub first. When things are busy, keep your time in the hot tub reasonable.

Fifteen minutes is plenty when others are waiting their turn. Lastly, please don’t try to “save” space with a towel while you wander off. Courtesy in the pool area makes it more enjoyable for everyone.

11. Tip Appropriately

Whether gratuities are added automatically or not, it’s always nice to recognize great service with something extra when you can. Crew members work long hours, and those small gestures mean a lot.

I like to keep a few smaller bills, usually ones and fives, handy so I can tip when someone goes above and beyond. A cabin steward who quickly brings extra hangers, a bartender who remembers your favorite drink, or a waiter who bring you out extra desserts are all little moments that deserve a small thank you.

12. Keep Hallways Quiet at Night

Cruise ship cabins are closer together than you might think, and sounds carry easily in the hallways. Loud conversations, kids running, or doors slamming at two in the morning can wake up your neighbors.

If you’re traveling with children, make sure they understand the hallways aren’t a playground. Furthermore, if you’re heading back to your cabin late at night after the show or a night in the lounge, try to keep voices low.

13. Don’t Try to Sneak Alcohol or Forbidden Items

Cruise lines are very clear about what you can and cannot bring onboard. Trying to sneak items through security usually just leads to embarrassment and confiscation.

Alcohol is one of the biggest issues. One of the reasons cruise lines prohibit passengers from bringing unlimited amounts onboard is because bar staff can cut you off if you seem overly intoxicated, but if you’re drinking your own stash, no one is there to step in.

At the end of the day, these rules are in place for everyone’s safety and comfort, so it’s best to follow them.

14. Respect Personal Space in Crowds

Royal Caribbean amazing Oasis class cruise ship aqua theater

Crowds are part of the cruise experience, whether you’re at the buffet, waiting for a tender boat, or finding your seat in the theater. A little patience goes a long way.

Don’t cut in line, don’t press right up against people in front of you, and try to give others some breathing room. Everyone is excited to get to the same places, but being respectful makes the whole experience smoother and less stressful for everyone.

15. Keep a Positive Attitude

Things won’t always go exactly as planned on a cruise. Maybe it rains on your beach day, your favorite show gets canceled, or your luggage takes a little longer to arrive at your cabin. It happens.

The key is to keep a positive attitude and remember that you’re still on a cruise. When you constantly complain, it doesn’t just affect you, it impacts the people around you and can bring down the whole vibe.

Nobody wants their vacation overshadowed by negativity. At the end of the day, you’re sailing the open seas, enjoying great food, and experiencing new places. Things could be much worse, so take a deep breath, smile, and go with the flow.
