Cruising is one of the best ways to explore exciting destinations and experience unique cultures. However, with new places come new challenges, and staying safe should always be a priority.
Whether you’re wandering through vibrant marketplaces, enjoying local cuisine, or embarking on adventurous excursions, being prepared can make all the difference.
In this post, we’ll go over essential tips to help you avoid potential risks and ensure a smooth, worry-free cruise experience.
What to Expect in Cruise Ports

Cruise ports can be amazing places to explore, but recent travel advisories and certain situations require us to be extra cautious. I love exploring ports, but I always take precautions to stay safe.
Here’s my personal guide to making the most of your trip while keeping security a top priority.
Practical Safety Tips for Cruise Travelers
1. Don’t Wear Your Lanyard or Medallion in Port
One of the easiest ways to stand out as a tourist is by wearing your cruise lanyard or medallion around your neck. This makes you an easy target for scams or theft. Instead, tuck it away in a purse or secure pocket.
2. Leave Flashy Jewelry on the Ship
Your cabin has a safe—use it! Avoid wearing expensive or even flashy-looking jewelry. Even cubic zirconia rings can attract attention in certain ports.
3. Carry Your Cruise Ship Contact Number
Always have your cruise ship’s contact number handy. This can often be found on the back of your key card, the daily planner, or a port map provided by the cruise line. Taking a quick photo of the number before leaving the ship ensures you’ll have it in case of emergency.
4. Check Government Travel Advisories
Before heading into port, check for any government-issued travel advisories. While cruise lines won’t dock at places that are actively unsafe, some destinations may have raised alert levels. Being informed can help you make better decisions.
5. Bring Cash and a Credit Card for Emergencies

Having both cash and a credit card is essential. I usually bring $75–$100 in cash for small purchases, taxi rides, and tips. However, using a credit card for bigger purchases adds an extra layer of security.
6. Book Excursions with Reputable Companies
If you’re exploring a destination known for safety concerns (like Roatán, Cozumel, or Nassau), booking a cruise-sponsored or reputable third-party excursion (like Shore Excursions Group) is a good idea. These companies have back-to-ship guarantees and follow safety protocols.
7. Stay in Crowded, Well-Traveled Areas
A rule of thumb is to stick around well-populated tourist areas helps minimize risk. Avoid wandering down deserted streets or venturing too far from the main attractions.
8. Avoid Risky Excursions
Some excursions, like ziplining, scuba diving (for beginners), or swimming with sharks, may come with higher risks, especially in regions with fewer safety regulations. Always research the provider before booking.
9. Avoid Renting Mopeds
Moped rentals in cruise ports can be dangerous due to road conditions, aggressive drivers, and potential scams. Accidents happen frequently, and medical facilities in some locations may not be up to your home country’s standards.
10. Always Have Travel Insurance
Unexpected situations like injuries, illness, or trip cancellations happen. Travel insurance can help cover medical expenses and other emergencies while abroad.
Avoiding Common Cruise Port Scams

11. Beware of Pushy Vendors
If someone aggressively tries to pull you into their store, be cautious. Some high-pressure sales tactics involve overcharging or selling counterfeit goods.
12. Ignore the “I Was Your Waiter” Scam
A common scam involves someone approaching you and claiming they were your waiter or worked on your ship, then directing you to their “family’s store” or restaurant. Politely decline and move on.
13. Only Use Licensed Taxis
Look for official taxi stands with posted rates. Taking unlicensed taxis can result in overcharging or unsafe situations.
14. Protect Your Belongings
- Use a zippered bag instead of an open tote.
- Keep your wallet in your front pocket.
- Consider a money belt or slash-proof handbag for added security.
- Use a waterproof waist pouch or lockbox for valuables on the beach.
15. Watch Out for Pickpockets
In busy ports like Barcelona or Rome, pickpockets are a real issue. Keep your bag in front of you and be mindful in crowded areas.

Additional Cruise Port Safety Tips
Be Aware of Ship Time vs. Local Time
Your cruise ship might not adjust to local time, which can cause confusion. Always keep a watch or phone set to ship time and aim to return at least an hour before departure to avoid missing your ship.
Safe Food and Drink Choices
- Avoid drinking tap water in some ports; always buy bottled water from reputable stores.
- Research restaurants ahead of time to ensure they follow hygiene standards.
- Be cautious of street food vendors unless they have good reviews or recommendations.
Use a Travel Agent for Peace of Mind
A good cruise travel agent can provide insights on safe excursions, insurance options, and destination-specific tips.

Traveling in pairs or small groups is always safer. If you’re solo, consider joining another cruise passenger for the day. Don’t meet up with strangers from online platforms in port—it’s too risky.
Should You Take Your Passport Off the Ship on Port Days?

There’s no definitive answer, but here’s my approach:
- I always bring a government-issued ID (like a driver’s license) off the ship.
- I leave my passport locked in the cabin safe.
- I keep a digital copy of my passport on my phone and email it to myself in case of emergencies.
