DON’T Make These Cruise Packing Mistakes in 2026: New Rules You Need to Know

Sharing is caring!

Even experienced cruisers are discovering that cruise lines are cracking down on what you can and cannot bring onboard in 2026. From confiscated items to missed boarding times, these packing mistakes can seriously impact your vacation before it even begins.

I’m sharing the real cruise packing mistakes that travelers have made, including items that were confiscated and never returned. Whether you’re a first-time cruiser or a seasoned sailor, these tips will help you avoid common pitfalls and ensure a smooth start to your voyage.

Packing the Wrong Items in Checked Luggage

One of the biggest mistakes cruisers make is confusing airline TSA rules with cruise line policies. The rules for what you can pack in a carry-on bag are completely different on a cruise than when you’re flying, particularly when it comes to liquids.

Here’s what happened to one traveler: she packed wine in her checked luggage, thinking it would be safer there. Most cruise lines do allow adults to bring one bottle of wine per person onboard; however, it must be in your carry-on bag on embarkation day.

Cruise lines are now getting strict about this rule, and in her case, the wine was not only confiscated from her checked luggage, it wasalso  discarded and never returned to her.

More and more cruisers are reporting that security is becoming more vigilant. While cruise security isn’t as strict as the TSA in some ways, they’re definitely enforcing their rules more consistently than in the past.

Luggage Tag Disasters

I recently met a couple who disembarked from a Holland America cruise and shared a nightmare scenario: they didn’t get their luggage until four days into the cruise. Somehow, their suitcases ended up on the wrong ship, and they had to wait until both ships were in the same port to get their belongings back.

This highlights how important it is to have your luggage tags printed and placed securely on your bags. I always recommend using plastic reusable luggage tag holders, which are inexpensive on Amazon and prevent tags from falling off during handling.

Mix Your Outfits Between Suitcases

Here’s a smart strategy I follow when cruising: pack at least one outfit for your spouse or partner in their suitcase. It’s a good idea to mix the outfits between bags, so if anyone’s luggage is misplaced, you won’t be stuck without any clothes.

Cruise suitcases & carry on bags

I always pack one or two extra outfits in my carry-on using compression packing cubes. That way, if there’s any delay with my checked luggage, I can at least mix and match between two different sets of clothing. This is especially important for avoiding cruise packing mistakes that could ruin your first day at sea.

Not Checking the Cruise Line Dress Code

While cruise lines have definitely become more casual in their day-to-day dress code, there are still rules that apply. Several cruise passengers said they made mistakes that you probably wouldn’t consider, particularly when it comes to shoes.

You want to make sure you have closed-toe shoes for certain activities on board and for certain shore excursions. Many excursions require closed-toed shoes, even if it’s just for insurance purposes. Don’t get caught unprepared for an activity you’ve been looking forward to.

Pack for Theme Nights

Different cruise lines have various theme nights, and while they’re not obligatory, they’re definitely part of the fun. On Virgin Voyages, they have Scarlet Night, where almost everybody dresses in red. If you go on Holland America, they have an orange night where passengers dress in orange or at least wear an orange accessory.

No matter what cruise line you’re on, it’s always a good idea to pack something white, as there may be a white party or a glow party. These theme nights create memorable experiences and great photo opportunities.

Restaurant Appropriate Clothing

Don’t assume you can live in bathing suits and cover-ups just because you’re headed to the Caribbean or Bahamas. Unfortunately, some cruisers have found that over the last year or so, cruise lines are being more strict about what you can wear in the indoor restaurants and dining rooms.

You cannot enter a dining room in just a cover-up, and in some cases, you can’t even enter wearing shorts. Men should bring at least one pair of pants or dark jeans, plus one polo or collared shirt, as some specialty restaurants require this. Ladies, mesh swimsuit cover-ups are fine next to the pool, but something more solid might be required for interior restaurants, even at lunch.

Forgetting Essential Items from Your Packing List

Not using a good cruise packing list is a mistake many people regret. Here are some things cruisers have forgotten:

  • Underwear (yes, really)
  • Bathing suits
  • A belt
  • Dress pants that match the suit jacket left at home
  • A sweater or sweatshirt

That last item might surprise you, especially if you’re planning a warm-weather cruise. Trust me, I’ve forgotten this before and regretted it. Those sweatshirts cost twice the price if you buy them in the cruise store, though at least you’ll get a souvenir.

Even Caribbean cruises get pretty cool at night due to the Caribbean breeze, especially during sailaway. The air conditioning on the interior of the cruise ship can be quite chilly too, so it’s a good idea to bring a sweater, cardigan, or light wrap.

Hair Dryers and Voltage Issues

My friend Becky from MEI Travel just went on a Disney cruise and her hair dryer was confiscated. It turned out the issue was the voltage of her hair dryer. Disney is quite strict about this, and when she went to pick up her hair dryer at the end of the cruise, there were many Dyson hair dryers on the table.

If you have a Dyson Air Wrap, be careful and check your cruise line’s regulations. While many cruise lines aren’t necessarily banning the Dyson Air Wrap, there are anecdotal reports of people saying their Dyson didn’t work on their cruise ship. I would probably leave my Dyson at home just to be safe.

Most cruise ships provide hair dryers in the cabin, so if you’re worried about voltage issues, you can always rely on the one provided.

Common Travel Items You Cannot Bring on a Cruise

Iron

This isn’t an extensive list, but these are very common items you might normally bring on a trip that you cannot bring on a cruise:

  • Irons and steamers – These are not allowed on any cruise ship due to fire hazards. Most ships offer pressing services if needed.
  • Surge protected power cubes – Most cruise ships allow non-surge protected power cubes and travel adapters. However, if you’re cruising on Royal Caribbean or Celebrity, they’re more strict and only allow multi-USB charging outlet hubs.

Don’t Forget Your Prescription Medication

Keep in mind that once you’re on your cruise ship, you’re no longer in the United States. While you might normally pick up your prescription medication from another pharmacy at home, it’s very challenging to do so on a cruise.

You really want to make sure that you’ve packed all of your prescription medication before you leave home. Beyond prescription medications, packing first-aid items and over-the-counter medication is important, too.

You can get these items on a cruise, but you may need to buy them in the cruise line store at much higher prices, or potentially make an appointment at the medical center, which can mean a significant bill.

Prepare for the What-Ifs

I know we don’t want to pack too many “just in case” items, but there are a few that can be quite helpful: if you use eyeglasses, bring an extra pair with you, or at least an eyeglass repair kit.

Some cruisers also bring a dental repair kit, which can be invaluable if you have an issue while at sea.

These small items take up minimal space but can save you from major inconvenience and expense if something goes wrong during your cruise.

Smart Packing Strategies for 2026

Cruise lines are enforcing their rules more strictly than ever before. Understanding what’s allowed and what’s not can save you from disappointment, confiscation, and unnecessary expenses.

Whether you’re sailing on Princess Cruises, Celebrity, or any other line, always check your specific cruise line’s prohibited items list before you pack. Rules can vary between cruise lines, and what’s acceptable on one ship might be confiscated on another.

Planning ahead and packing smart ensures you’ll spend less time worrying about logistics and more time enjoying your cruise vacation. Taking a few extra minutes to review your packing list and cruise line policies can make the difference between a stressful start and a smooth sailing adventure.

Ready to make sure your cruise vacation goes off without a hitch? Start with a solid packing list, double-check your cruise line’s specific rules, and pack those just-in-case items. Your future self will thank you when you’re relaxing by the pool instead of dealing with packing problems.
