What’s Missing at Sea? Cruisers Share Their Perfect Ship Wish List

What Would Be on the Perfect Cruise Ship? Real Cruisers Share Their Wish List

Sharing is caring!

If you could design the perfect cruise ship from scratch, what features would it have? This question sparked a lively conversation in the Life Well Cruised Community, where over 200 cruise enthusiasts shared their ideas from the practical to the nostalgic.

Whether it’s comfort in the stateroom, better food options, or thoughtful amenities, cruisers have some clear opinions about what would make their time at sea even better.

Here’s a look at what real cruisers say they want on their dream ship:

Better Cabin Design and In-Room Comforts

Cruise cabins have come a long way. However, many cruise guests still feel there’s room for improvement, especially when it comes to comfort and practicality.

One community member shared, “Larger showers, a button on your room phone to hear important announcements.” These small changes could significantly improve the onboard experience, especially for those with spacious bathrooms and convenience.

Another frequent request was for a better shower design. One cruiser suggested, “Glass shower doors, not curtains,” pointing out how frustrating the standard clingy shower curtain can be.

The good news is that cruise lines have taken notice. Princess Cruises, Celebrity Cruises, and MSC Cruises have started incorporating glass shower doors on their newer ships, which many cruisers appreciate.

In-room ironing was also brought up, with one person noting, “A steam iron in every room” would be a welcome addition, especially for longer cruises or formal nights.

Practical Amenities That Make a Difference

Beyond the cabin, cruisers want more control and flexibility during their voyage. Self-service laundry stations, for example, were mentioned more than once.

As one member of the Life Well Cruised community put it simply, “Self-service laundry” should be a standard feature. Self-service laundry is especially helpful for families, longer itineraries, or anyone who prefers to pack light.

Pricing for solo travelers was another common concern. Several members expressed a desire for more equitable pricing, with one calling for “a true solo cruiser rate.”

Solo cruisers often feel penalized for traveling alone, and many would welcome the opportunity to cruise without paying a steep single supplement. It’s worth noting that cruise lines like NCL have implemented studio cabins for solo cruisers to travel without having to pay the single supplement.

Nostalgic Touches and Food Favorites

When it comes to dining, it wasn’t just new options people asked for; many cruisers also longed for the return of old cruise traditions.

One cruiser said, “Bring back the midnight chocolate buffet,” capturing a sentiment shared by others who miss the whimsical and indulgent nature of this classic offering. These late-night buffets were once a signature feature and remain a nostalgic memory for many seasoned cruisers.

More variety in casual dining was also suggested, with one commenter recommending “a sub sandwich shop” to provide more grab-and-go options beyond pizza or burgers.

Now, many cruise lines offer sandwiches. However, a dedicated sub station is something I could definitely get behind!

Relaxation and Adults-Only Spaces

Several cruisers emphasized the need for more adult-only areas onboard, particularly when it comes to pools and quiet spaces. One person shared, “Always an adult-only area with a pool, and more shaded spots,” highlighting the importance of designated spaces for relaxation.

Another expanded on this by saying, “Adult-only pool with swim-up bar,” suggesting that these spaces could offer both tranquility and a touch of fun.

It’s worth noting that cruisers who are looking for a fully adult-only experience may want to consider Virgin Voyages. The entire cruise line is adults-only, which makes it an appealing option for those seeking a more grown-up vibe.

Access to spa-like amenities without the added cost was another popular request. One cruiser wrote, “Complimentary steamroom and sauna for men and women separately,” emphasizing the desire for wellness options that are more inclusive and accessible.

Personally, I can definitely get behind this idea. I love using the steam room and sauna on cruises, and would love to see these spaces included more often, without requiring a spa pass.

More Activities and Smarter Spaces

When it comes to onboard activities, cruisers are looking for options that go beyond the basics. One person recommended an “indoor pickleball court,” noting that it would allow for year-round play regardless of weather conditions.

Considering how popular pickleball has become with cruise travelers, an indoor court would likely be a big hit.

Another suggestion was to bring back more traditional onboard games. One cruiser simply said, “Pool tables,” a reminder that these used to be fairly common on ships. Unfortunately, they’re being featured less and less on newer cruise ships, something many pool fans find disappointing.

Chair Hogs!

While lounging by the pool is a favorite cruise pastime, one recurring frustration stood out among our community members: chair hogging. As one cruiser put it, “Better policing of chairs on the Lido deck,” highlighting a well-known issue that continues to impact the overall experience, especially on sea days.

Whether it’s at a resort or on a cruise ship, chair hogs seem to be a universal problem for travelers. Although cruise lines have implemented various measures to discourage this behavior, it remains a persistent issue.

One creative solution I came across online was the idea of providing dedicated lockers or cubbies near the pool area. This would allow cruisers to safely store their belongings instead of using deck chairs as temporary storage while swimming. It’s a simple concept that could help free up seating and reduce frustration.

Would this work? I’d love to know what you think.

A True Sports Bar Experience at Sea

While the suggestions from our community were incredibly thoughtful and diverse, I have one personal cruise ship wish that I just had to add: a larger, more immersive sports bar. I think having a space designed specifically for watching live games, with oversized screens, comfortable, classic bar food, and a great selection of beer would be a game changer.

There’s nothing like being in a room full of passionate fans, all cheering (or groaning) together as the game unfolds!

To be fair, Carnival does offer a dedicated sports viewing space on their Excel-class ships, and it’s one of the better setups currently at sea. That said, it often feels very crowded during major games or playoff events.

A more spacious venue, with better seating and sight lines, would elevate the experience for sports fans and anyone looking to enjoy a fun, lively atmosphere onboard.
