Thinking about your next Carnival cruise and wondering how to make it the best it can be? Whether you’re dreaming of fun and relaxation on the lido deck, awesome cruise food or being entertained with loads of onboard activities, these Carnival cruise tips will help!
Carnival is known for offering affordable vacations, which makes it a great choice for first-time cruisers. They’re also known for being the “Fun Ships,” which provide a family-friendly, casual, and fun cruise experience.
I took my first Carnival cruise in 2011 and only recently got back to sailing with the popular cruise line. Even though I’ve taken over 30 cruises, each cruise line has it’s own “insider” tips and tricks.
So, when I took 2 Carnival cruises within the last year, I almost felt like a newbie! However, I was pretty excited to sail on the “Fun Ships” again and researched all the Carnival cruise tips, tricks and hacks I could find.
After my most recent cruise onboard Carnival Celebration, I’ve picked up some valuable tips and learned from a couple cruise mistakes. Whether you’re a first time cruiser or a loyal Carnival cruise fan, these valuable tips will help you to save money and make the most of your time onboard.
50 Carnival Cruise Line Tips
1. Print Your Boarding Pass Ahead of Time
Upon finishing your online check-in process, you can access your Carnival Cruise boarding pass. Many cruise lines allow cruise passengers to download digitally to their phones. However, Carnival Cruise Line asks guests to print it beforehand.
Although printing a boarding pass may feel outdated, it is essential to the Carnival’s embarkation process. Once the port agent scans your boarding pass, your boarding pass will get stamped, and you can head to the security checkpoint.
Once you pass through security, you can enter the cruise ship, and your cruise vacation has officially begun.
If you forget to print your boarding pass, expect the embarkation process to take longer. It’s best to be prepared, so you can start embarkation day on the right foot.
2. Research Your Cruise Before Booking it
Before booking your Carnival cruise, doing some research is a good idea. The cruise ship and itinerary you choose will affect the pricing, crowd, and activities offered onboard.
For instance, a 3-4 day Carnival cruise attracts a party crowd. The cruise passengers who book shorter cruises are typically looking for a “booze cruise” vibe or a quick weekend getaway.
Don’t get me wrong, a 7-day Carnival cruise will still have lots of parties and fun activities. However, it won’t be as wild as a shorter cruise itinerary.
Another factor to consider is the cruise ship you choose. Typically, older cruise ships will be less polished and offer fewer activities. However, the pricing tends to be more affordable.
On the other hand, newer Carnival cruises offer a variety of fun activities, and they will look more modern as they are brand new. For instance, I just sailed on Carnival Celebration, and I was amazed by the beautiful decor and the amazing activities like the Bolt Rollercoaster.
3. Ask for a Real Menu
When you dine in the main dining room onboard a Carnival cruise, the menu is accessible via a QR code on the table. If you prefer to look at a physical menu, just ask one of the crew members.
This is a common request onboard Carnival cruise ships, and plenty of physical menus are available upon request.
Bonus tip: You can access the dining menu through the CarnivalHub app. It’s a good idea to check out the menu before going to the dining room so you can arrange alternative dining plans if nothing appeals to you.
4. Book Specialty Dining on Embarkation Day for a Free Bottle of Wine
If you didn’t purchase the beverage package, consider booking specialty dining for the first night of your cruise. A Carnival cruise tip rarely discussed is that you will receive a complimentary bottle of red or white wine when you dine in a specialty dining venue on embarkation day.
Another money saving tip I learned is that you can buy extra bottles of wine, and get 50% off, at the specialty dining venue on embarkation day. You can take the wine back to your cabin and bring it to the dining room or a restaurant another evening.
On my last Carnival cruise, I was trying to stick to a budget, so I decided not to purchase the Cheers! drink package. Since I still wanted to drink, I purchased an extra bottle of wine (at 50% off) on the first night of my cruise to enjoy it later.
This secret tip is honestly such a good value, and it’s certainly worth taking advantage of if you do not plan on purchasing the drink package on your next cruise.
5. Enjoy the Complimentary Activities
One of the benefits of sailing with Carnival is the variety of included activities. From water slides to ropes courses and mini golf, Carnival has some of the best complimentary onboard activities and attractions at sea.
That said, like most cruise lines, Carnival also offers activities that have an extra charge. For instance, Bolt roller coaster, Build-a-Bear Workshop, and the video arcade come at an extra price.
Although some activities cost extra, Carnival still offers tons of free things to do to keep cruisers entertained throughout their cruise vacation.
6. Consider Booking Faster to the Fun
Do you want to board faster and have a less stressful embarkation day! Carnival’s Faster to the Fun early embarkation program allows cruise passengers to purchase perks that will enhance the first day of your cruise.
These perks included priority boarding, early cabin access to drop off luggage, faster luggage delivery, priority dining reservations, priority access to guest services, priority tendering, and priority disembarkation.
We didn’t do this and it may have been a mistake. The boarding process was a bit chaotic so I may try purchasing FTTF on a future cruise.
It’s worth noting that suite guests and high-level VIFB Club members receive extra perks without purchasing the Faster to the Fun program.

7. Take Advantage of the Complimentary Dining Options
One of the best things about cruising with Carnival is the variety of included dining options. From Guy’s Burger Joint to Shaq’s Big Chicken and even the main dining room, there is no shortage of delicious included dining options.
During my time on Carnival Celebration, I was blown away by all of the included dining options. Furthermore, the food quality surpassed expectations, and every meal was very enjoyable.
With over 20 dining venues onboard Carnival Celebration, it was hard to try every restaurant. However, I did attempt to try most of them, and they were all very good.
I have to say that if you’re a burger lover, you’ll want to try Guy’s Burgers. These are undoubtedly the best burgers at sea, and they are worth trying.

8. Make the Most of Carnival’s Loyalty Program
If you’ve sailed with Carnival in the past, it’s worth verifying your loyalty status. Perks range from free water bottles and cocktails to specialty dining, complimentary laundry, and free Carnival apparel.
Before sailing with Carnival, research which perks you can receive are worth it.
Furthermore, if you enjoy sailing with Carnival, continue booking cruises with them to increase your loyalty and earn amazing free perks.
9. Download the CarnivalHub Mobile App
You’ll want to download the CarnivalHub app if you’re a first-time Carnival cruiser. This app will give you access to dining reservations, the daily planner, and more!
During your Carnival cruise vacation, you’ll want to check the CarnivalHub app daily. This is a great way to stay updated on your daily itinerary and activities.
Bonus Tip: Download the CarnivalHub app before embarkation day. Wi-Fi is often weak at the cruise port, making it hard to download the Carnivals mobile app.
10. Head to BlueIguana Cantina for Breakfast
A secret that many new cruisers, or in some cases experienced cruisers, may not know is that BlueIguana Cantina serves breakfast. This hidden gem is a great dining venue to grab a delicious bite to eat in the morning.
During my time at the Carnival Celebration, I ate breakfast at BlueIguana Cantina almost every day. The breakfast burritos were always fresh, and there was rarely a line.
Since most guests visit the Lido Marketplace Buffet for breakfast, consider checking out the alternative dining venues. Whether it’s Shaq’s Big Chicken, Guy’s Pig and Anchor, or JaveBlue Café, take advantage of the various dining options.
11. Attend the “Very Fun” Sailaway Party
One of the highlights of any Carnival cruise vacation is the “Very Fun” sailaway party. Once your cruise ship begins to sail, the sailaway party begins on the lido deck, and it is a blast.
Cruise passengers will be dancing, drinking, and celebrating the beginning of their amazing cruise adventure.
This is a great time to take pictures, grab a drink, and dance. You can also see the beautiful ocean as you leave the cruise port.
12. Pack Your Own Toiletries
Carnival staterooms are equipped with the bare minimum toiletries (bar of soap, generic body wash, and shampoo.) So, when you’re on a Carnival ship, you’ll want to pack your own toiletries.
If you happen to forget your toiletries at home, a shop sells them onboard. However, you will be paying a premium price for these items.
Be sure to pack your shampoo, conditioner, face wash, sunscreen, and aloe cream (for sunburns). Furthermore, many cruisers pack a travel-size first-aid kit for emergencies.

13. Choose an Early Embarkation Time
When doing your online pre-cruise check-in, choose the earliest embarkation time possible. This way, you can fully enjoy embarkation day.
New cruisers may not realize that embarkation day can be hectic.
The combination of wanting to explore the cruise ship, eating, and unpacking takes time, so it’s best to embark as early as possible.
14. Try Funfetti Cheesecake on Embarkation Day
A secret Carnival cruise tip we learned about from fellow cruisers is the Funfetti cheesecake. This cheesecake is very tasty, and it is certainly worth trying. However, there is a catch!
The Funfetti cheesecake is only offered only on embarkation day at lunch, and there are limited quantities. So, if you want to try this delicious dessert, head to the lido marketplace right away on embarkation day!
15. Book Shore Excursions in Advance
If you plan on doing shore excursions when you’re in the ports of call, you’ll want to book them in advance. The most popular shore excursions are often booked early, so if you wait till the last minute, you may not get the shore excursion you want.
Bonus tip: If the shore excursion you want to do is fully booked, visit the shore excursion desk. Sometimes, there are extra spots or cancellations.
Book 3rd party Excursions
I never want to discourage people from booking cruise line excursions. However, they are usually more expensive than independent tour providers, and can have other limitations.
We usually book with Shore Excursions Group, as they offer small group (and even private) excursions often at a much better price.
Here’s the info to check what excursions are available for your cruise: Shore Excursions Group (check your cruise excursions & price here)
16. Look at the Deck Plans Before Choosing Your Stateroom
You’ll want to choose the best stateroom possible when booking your cruise. The best way to choose a great cabin is to research and explore the deck plans.
Generally, you’ll want to avoid staying right next to the elevators as it can get noisy.
You’ll also want to choose a convenient deck for your wants and needs. On my last cruise, I had a cabin on deck 8 right next to the promenade deck.
This made it convenient to go and grab a bite to eat, check out the different shows, and enjoy a drink at one of the bars without having to walk too far.

17. Attend the Onboard Entertainment
Carnival is known for having some of the best onboard entertainment at sea. From live music, comedy shows, production shows, Deal or No Deal, and Family Feud, there is no shortage of entertainment on a Carnival cruise.
It’s worth noting that older ships may not have the same quality of entertainment as the new Carnival cruise ships. However, there will always be something onboard to keep you entertained.
18. Take Advantage of the Complimentary Kids Club
One of the benefits of sailing with Carnival is the complimentary kids’ club. Carnival Cruise Line offers supervised public places for kids and teenagers between the ages of 2 and 17 to meet and participate in activities.
At the kids club (Camp Ocean), children are split into groups based on their age. Children ages 2 to 5 are in the Penguins group, kids ages 6 to 8 are in the Stingrays group and children ages 9 to 11 are in the Sharks group.
Circle C is for younger teenagers ages 12-14, and Club O2 is for older teenagers ages 15-17.
If you’re sailing as a family, taking advantage of the kids club is a great way to make the most of your Carnival cruise. This way, you can enjoy relaxing by the pool or watching incredible shows while your children are hanging out in the kids club.
19. Arrive Early for Shows
Carnival Cruise Line is known for having amazing entertainment options. From incredible production shows, live musical acts, and hilarious comedians, you will not want to miss the entertainment.
However, you’ll want to line up in advance due to a lack of seating.
For popular shows, lining up 30-45 minutes before showtime is a great way to ensure you get a sea. If you don’t line up in advance, you may not get a chair or stand-up throughout the show.
20. Bring Your Own Drinks
Did you know that you can save money on your cruise by your own pop and even a bottle of wine?
Carnival permits cruise passengers to bring one bottle of wine, sparkling wine, or champagne per adult over 21. However, cruisers will be subjected to a $15 corkage fee if they choose to drink alcohol at a bar or onboard restaurant.
On our last carnival cruise, we noticed many cruisers carrying a 12-pack of soda onboard on embarkation day. This way, they can enjoy their soft drinks and don’t have to purchase them onboard.

21. Pack a Bathing Suit for Embarkation Day
On embarkation day, the fun starts right away. This means you can wear your bathing suits and hop in the pools, try out the waterslides, and relax in the hot tubs as soon as you board.
It’s a good idea to wear a bathing suit on embarkation day or pack one in your carry-on bag.
This way, you can make the most of your first day onboard the Carnival ship and indulge in the fun water activities.
22. Request Your Dining Tables Early
If you decide to eat at a sit-down restaurant, you must request a table via the CarnivalHub app. It is best to do this in advance to get a preferred dining time.
At times, the table will be available right away. However, during busy dining hours, you may have to wait for a short period of time.
Instead of booking your table when you’re hungry, request a dining table 30 minutes in advance. This way, you’ll guarantee yourself a table when you’re hungry.
23. Try Bolt Rollercoaster!
Bolt Rollercoaster is offered on Carnival’s Excel-class cruise ships (Carnival Mardi Gras, Carnival Celebration, Carnival Jubilee), and it is the most incredible attraction at sea.
The idea of a rollercoaster on a cruise ship is truly amazing, and the ride was a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Bolt costs $15, and Carnival guests can ride around the track twice.
Whether you’re an adrenaline junkie or you’re open to trying new things, the Bolt rollercoaster is worth the price.
Bonus tip: Book Bolt Rollercoaster on embarkation day via the CarnivalHub app. Due to its popularity, it could be hard to get the chance to ride it.

24. Put Your Cell Phone in Airplane Mode
On embarkation day, it is important to put your cell phone into airplane mode. This will prevent your cell phone carrier from charging you for roaming.
Once you are in airplane mode, you can connect to the ship’s Wi-Fi (if you have an internet package) or remain disconnected and enjoy your time onboard the cruise ship without online access.
25. Attend Sea Day Brunch
One of the highlights of a Carnival cruise is the Sea Day brunch. On sea days between 8:30 am and 1:00 pm, cruisers can enjoy a wonderful complimentary brunch that features some really tasty menu items.
From pancakes to french toast and burgers, Sea Day brunch is something every Carnival cruiser has to try once.
Bonus tip: Reserve your Sea Day brunch seating time through the CarnivalHub app so you don’t get stuck waiting to be seated.
26. Book Your Cruise During the Shoulder Season to Save Money
If you’re on a budget and looking to take a Carnival cruise, consider booking it during the regular season. Often, cruise lines offer great deals during the shoulder season as cruisers are less likely to sail during these times of the year.
Furthermore, sailing during the shoulder season has a secret benefit. Many people don’t realize that most cruise ships sail below max capacity during should-season, so you’ll have a better cruising experience.

27. Try the Specialty Restaurants
If you want an enhanced dining experience, consider booking a specialty restaurant. Specialty restaurants are dining venues that provide exceptional service, high-quality food options, and a unique ambiance.
We loved Fahrenheit 555, Carnival’s Steakhouse, which went to on embarkation day on Carnival Venezia and Carnival Celebration.
Although the included food options are great onboard Carnival cruise ships, visiting a specialty restaurant is the perfect way to celebrate a birthday or anniversary or enjoy an extra special meal.
28. Get Rewards for Your Military Service
Carnival Cruise Line rewards men and women who served in the military. From appreciation gatherings on every sailing to discounts on cruises, Carnival does a lot for active and retired Canadian and U.S. military members.
Furthermore, there is also a Heroes Tribute Lounge, where cruise passengers can enjoy a drink or watch sports in a military-themed venue.
29. Don’t Overpack (Unless You Want to)
Carnival cruises are very casual. This means that Carnival cruisers cannot overpack and wear the clothing they want.
Aside from Cruise Elegant night (Carnival’s version of the formal night), most Carnival cruise passengers dress fairly casually. On elegant nights it’s not unusual to see women and men in some pretty fabulous cruise outfits!
Since cruising on many other major cruise lines, I appreciated Carnival’s relaxed dress code. I never felt like I had to “dress up,” and I could wear whatever clothes I felt like throughout the cruise.
For those cruisers who prefer to dress up, nobody is stopping you. One of the wonderful things about Carnival is that everyone can wear what they want.

30. Purchase Your Packages Before Sailing
If you’re looking to save money on your next Carnival cruise, it’s best to buy the Cheers! drink package in advance and an internet plan. Carnival often offers packages with a 10% discount before the cruise.
If you like to drink, you will find that the Cheers! beverage package is a great value. This package includes alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages. Paying for each drink individually is quite pricey and adds up quickly.

31. Enjoy Breakfast With Dr. Seuss
Once per cruise, Carnival offers a Dr. Seuss-themed breakfast where families can meet some of their favorite Seuss characters and take photos.
For breakfast, Carnival transforms part of the main dining room into a Dr. Seuss-themed wonderland for young children to explore.
Young cruisers can order the famous Green Eggs and Ham breakfast at breakfast (however, it costs extra).
Cruise passengers can reserve the Dr. Suess breakfast through the Hub app. This is an excellent activity for young cruisers and something unique for Carnival.

32. Pack a Refillable Water Bottle
One of my pet peeves about Carnival is that the cups at the drink stations are very small. So, to stay hydrated, a refillable water bottle is a good idea.
This way, you can walk around the cruise ship with your water bottle, and you don’t have to constantly head to a drink station to get more water.
It’s worth noting that if you’ve purchase Carnival’s beverage package, you can pickup water bottles at the bar.
33. Finance Your Cruise Vacation
Carnival offers payment plans for cruisers who can’t pay for their cruise vacation upfront.
With Carnival EasyPay available on select cruises, Carnival guests can pay a deposit for at least five months before sailing. After the deposit is placed, Carnival will charge your credit card monthly until the amount is paid in full with no additional fees.
Additionally, cruise travelers can finance their cruise through Uplift. This is a long time that you can pay back over 18 months.
34. Look Out For the Towel Animal Takeover
The towel animal takeover is a unique event on Carnival cruise ships. The pool deck will be infested with amazing towel animal creations one morning.
This is a great opportunity to take photos and enjoy these incredible creations.
The towel animal takeover often happens on the last sea day. However, on our sailing trip, it happened during a port day. So, check out the lido deck every morning to ensure you don’t miss out on this fun event.
35. Enjoy Shareholder Perks
One of the ways frequent cruisers get onboard credits (and save money) is through cruise line shareholder benefits. If you own more than 100 shares in Carnival Corporation, you are eligible to receive an onboard credit of $50 to $250, depending on the length of your cruise vacation.
You must notify the cruise line four weeks before the cruise ship sets sail to receive your shareholder benefits. Once you’re onboard, you will receive onboard credit to spend on souvenirs, shore excursions, drinks, and specialty dining.
36. Visit the Secret Deck
A cruise tip that many cruisers don’t know about is that older Carnival ships feature secret decks. Tucked away at the end of the cabin corridors is a small outdoor seating area at the ship’s front end.
This is a great place to watch sailaway or take pictures during a sea day.
Finding the secret deck isn’t obvious. However, you can ask a crew member or guest services to see if you can access it.
You’ll know you’re getting close to the secret deck when you find a door with a poor hole window towards the end of a stateroom corridor. The door will sometimes be locked during the evenings or when it’s windy.
37. Bring Seasickness Medications
Whether you’re a new cruiser or you’ve been on plenty of cruise sailings, it’s essential always to pack seasickness remedies. The last thing you want is to be stuck without motion sickness medication and ruin your day.
Even though I rarely get seasick, I always bring Bonine or Dramamine without just in case.
38. Take Advantage of Complimentary Room Service Breakfast
A secret Carnival cruise tip that is rarely discussed is that Carnival offers complimentary continental room service breakfast. You do need to call room service either the night before, or in the morning, to get free room service breakfast delivered.
In the morning, you’ll receive a knock on your stateroom door, which means your room service has arrived.
Throughout our cruise, we ordered room service almost every day. Even if it was just some coffee and a fruit bowl, room service breakfast was a great way to start our day.
39. Relax in Serenity (Adult-Only Area)
Many people think Carnival cruise ships are loud party ships, which is somewhat true. However, Carnival cruise ships have Serenity, an adult-only area that is quiet and perfect for relaxing.
If you prefer to relax in a quiet space and watch the ocean pass by, you’ll love Serenity.
Serenity is one of my favorite features on any Carnival ship because it provides the perfect relaxing escape from the fun party atmosphere onboard.
40. You Can Walk-On With Your Luggage on Embarkation Day
Embarkation day can be hectic, so it can take a while to receive your bags if you leave them with the porters at the cruise port. However, many cruisers don’t know you can walk on with your luggage.
The downside of walking on with your luggage is that you must lug your luggage around the cruise ship until your cabin is ready. However, you won’t have to worry about your bag not arriving (which is unlikely) or arriving late.
41. Arrive at Least One Day Before Your Cruise
Now, for experienced cruisers, this cruise tip is obvious. However, many new cruisers may not realize the importance of arriving in their port city a day in advance.
If you fly into the cruise port on embarkation day, there’s a chance you could miss your cruise. Whether it’s flight delays or traffic, a variety of factors are out of your control, which can result in the cruise ship leaving without you.
You can guarantee a smooth embarkation day process by arriving a day early and staying at a hotel near the cruise port.
It’s worth noting that if you’re late for the cruise ship on embarkation day or in port, the cruise will leave without you.
42. Enjoy Vegan Menu Items
Something many people may not realize is that Carnival offers awesome vegan items and a full vegan menu at their main restaurants. They also have a gluten free menu and try very hard to accomodate.
Carnival’s variety of vegan options is impressive, making it a great cruise line for cruisers with dietary restrictions.
43. Avoid Double Tipping
Carnival Cruise Line adds an additional 18% service charge to your bill when you order a drink or meal at a specialty restaurant. A service charge or a gratuity is automatically added to the spa and other similar services.
Tipping on a cruise can be confusing for first-time cruisers. However, tipping is not required since the gratuity is already added when making purchases.
There’s nothing wrong with giving an additional tip when a crew member goes above and beyond. However, tipping extra is not required, and it is optional.

44. Plan for Theme Nights
Throughout the cruise, there will be different theme nights. From formal nights to white nights, you’ll want to pack some clothing for these fun evenings.
There are plenty of photo stations around the cruise ship to document and bring home the memories. This is a great opportunity to take photos with the family while you’re all dressed up.
45. Don’t Miss Dinner Shows
Carnival’s main dining room staff are known for being fun and energetic. Throughout the cruise, the ship’s main restaurants will have a song-and-dance routine, usually known as “Showtime” contributing to the fun atmosphere.
Dancing along, waving your napkin, and clapping are acceptable and add to the fun ambiance. Many crew members love doing this and some are extremely talented!
46. Make the Most of Your Time at Half Moon Cay
If you’re lucky enough to visit Half Moon Cay, Bahamas, Carnival Corporation’s private island, you’re in for a treat. This is one of the most beautiful islands to visit with its beautiful white sand beaches and crystal clear water.
Cruise passengers will have to tender into port when visiting Half Moon Cay. Since you’ll want to make the most of your day in Half Moon Cay, be sure to line up early for the tender.
Related: 10 Cruise Tender Port Mistakes You’ll Want To Avoid
47. Decorate Your Cruise Cabin Door
One of the best ways to personalize your cruise cabin door is to decorate it. Many Carnival cruisers decorate their cabin doors to make their cabins more recognizable and easier to find.
During my Carnival cruise, I saw different door decorations, ranging from birthday decorations to cruise-related decorations. This fun Carnival cruise tradition is a great way to make your cabin stand out.

48. Be Kind Towards the Crew Members
No matter what cruise line you’re on, crew members deserve to be treated nicely. Being kind goes a long way, from the employees at the guest services desk to the dining staff and room attendants.
Asking crew members how their day is going or just saying please and thank you can brighten up their day. Being courteous towards those who work hard every day is important to make our cruise vacation so special.
49. Enjoy a Relaxed Debarkation
On debarkation day, many cruisers rush off the cruise ship. Many cruisers try to get off as early as possible, whether it’s because they need to catch a flight or for another reason.
However, if you have a later flight or are not in a rush, consider doing a later debarkation. Carnival allows its passengers to stay on the ship between 9:30 and 10:00 AM on debarkation day.
My flight was delayed in the late afternoon on my last Carnival cruise. Since I wasn’t in a rush, I enjoyed a relaxed debarkation, had a delicious breakfast, and even spent some time tanning on the pool deck. Getting off the cruise ship later also meant avoiding the long lines from the disembarkation rush.
50. Pack Carnival Cruise Essentials
ksWhen you sail with Carnival, you’ll want to bring certain essentials. Whether it’s magnet hooks, a cruise card lanyard, or cruise ducks, these cruise essentials will enhance your experience at sea.
Furthermore, every cruiser should have a cruise line-approved power strip, as there aren’t many electrical outlets inside the cabins.
