Skip Main Dining! 14 Reasons to Eat at the Cruise Buffet

buffet vs dining room

Sharing is caring!

When it comes to included dining on a cruise, many people naturally gravitate towards the main dining room, especially for evening meals. However, there are plenty of good reasons to consider the buffet instead.

Cruise ship buffets are a great included dining venue on a cruise ship, that we often take for granted.

Even though I love a sit down meal in an elegant restaurant on a cruise, there are times when the cruise buffet may be the better choice. Whether for breakfast, lunch, or even dinner, here are 13 reasons why you might want to skip the dining room and head to the cruise ship buffet on your next voyage.

Why Cruisers Love the Cruise Buffet

1. Variety of Options

One of the standout features of a cruise buffet is the incredible variety. Whether you’re in the mood for comfort food, fresh salads, or international cuisine, the buffet has something for everyone. Over the years, I’ve noticed that cruise ship buffets are only getting better, with more diverse and high-quality offerings.

From burgers and hot dogs to a wide selection of fruits and freshly grilled meats, the buffet caters to all tastes and preferences.

2. Casual Dining

The buffet is the ultimate spot for casual dining. If you’re not in the mood to dress up, this is the place to be. After a long day lounging by the pool or exploring a port, sometimes the last thing you want to do is get dressed up for a formal dinner.

I remember one evening in Bermuda when my husband and I were too relaxed to bother with the main dining room, so we opted for a laid-back dinner at the buffet instead. It was just what we needed, and we ended the night watching a movie under the stars—a perfect, stress-free evening.

3. No Dress Codes

One of the greatest advantages of the buffet is that there’s no dress code. If you’ve just come back from a day at the pool or an excursion, there’s no need to rush to your cabin to change or worry about apperances.

Whether you’re in your swimsuit cover-up or casual shorts and a t-shirt, you can head straight to the buffet and enjoy a relaxed meal. This particularly convenient after a day spent soaking up the sun.

4. Family-Friendly

If you’re cruising with kids, the buffet is your best friend. Kids love the freedom to choose their own meals, and many cruise lines even offer a dedicated kids’ buffet section.

When my kids were younger, they would light up when they got to pick their food without the pressure of sitting through a formal dinner. Plus, the casual atmosphere means you won’t feel guilty if your kids are a bit noisy or want to play on an iPad during the meal.

Here’s a tip: make the buffet your pre-date night spot! Have an early dinner with the kids at the buffet, then drop them off at the kids’ club and enjoy a more intimate dinner in the main dining room or a specialty restaurant.

5. No Reservations Needed

One of the perks of the buffet is that you don’t need to worry about making reservations. This is a huge plus for those who prefer a more spontaneous dining experience.

There are times on vacation that you won’t want to meals days in advance on a cruise. The buffet allows you to eat whenever you want, without the hassle of booking or waiting for a table.

6. Fresh, Healthy Foods

Cruise buffets often get a bad rap for their “comfort foods” or “fast food” type options, but they offer plenty of “healthy” options too.

I’m a big fan of the salad bars and fresh fruits that are typically available. You’ll also find freshly grilled meats, seafood, and even made-to-order dishes like stir-fries and omelets.

If you’re trying to maintain a specific diet or lifestyle while on vacation, the buffet can actually be a great option. Keep in mind that you can take unlimited vegetables, fruits and other favorites.

7. Guilt-Free Portions

One of the advantages of a buffet is that you can control your portions. Whether you want a small taste of something or a larger serving, you’re in charge.

Some cruise passengers share that this especially helpful if you’re trying to avoid overeating, which can be harder to do in the main dining room where portions are predetermined.

8. Speed and Efficiency

Dining in the main dining room is a leisurely experience, but sometimes you just want to eat quickly and move on to other activities. The buffet is perfect for those times when you’re in a hurry to catch a show or hit the casino.

You can get in, eat, and be on your way in no time.

9. Wide Variety of Drinks

The buffet isn’t just about food—it also offers a wide selection of drinks. You’ll find complimentary options like juices, water, coffee, and tea.

Many buffets also have a bar where you can order specialty coffees, cocktails, and other beverages, often without the need to wait for a server.

10. Grab-and-Go Snacks

Here’s a little cruise hack – the buffet is a great place to pick up snacks to enjoy later. I love grabbing some charcuterie and cheese, crackers, and fruit to take back to my balcony cabin for an afternoon snack or a pre-dinner treat.

If you have kids, you can take some cookies, fresh fruit or other foods to keep them satisfied throughout the day.

11. Amazing Ocean Views

One often-overlooked feature of the buffet is the stunning ocean views. Most cruise ship buffets have large windows that offer panoramic views of the sea.

On some ships, you can even dine outside on the deck, which is my personal favorite. There’s nothing quite like enjoying a meal while watching the sunset over the ocean.

12. A Change of Pace

Even though cruise food is fantastic, sometimes you just want a change of pace. After several nights of sit-down dining, the buffet offers a more relaxed alternative.

Whether you want to eat a little less, more or simply enjoy a different atmosphere, the buffet is a great option.

13. Reduced Food Waste

Buffets allow you to take exactly what you want, which can help reduce food waste.

Unlike in the main dining room, where portions are predetermined, the buffet lets you control your portions. While this won’t be true for everyone, it is a benefit for the buffet.

14. Flexibility and Freedom

Finally, the buffet offers flexibility and freedom. You can eat at your own pace, try different dishes, and even go back for seconds (or thirds!). For those who value a more laid-back dining experience, the buffet is the perfect choice.

Hi love your posts especially the tips n tricks. We recently cruised the South Pacific with P&O Cruises, this was our 6th cruise and the most disappointing particularly the Food Court / Buffet. It was queues for service and the food was often just warm or even cold there is nothing much worse than under cooked bacon and cold omelet. To top it of the dining opening times were limited so feeding hundreds in a 2 hour time frame often left no table inside. Thanks Keith
