12 Cruise Boarding Day Shortcuts They Don’t Tell First-Time Cruisers

Sharing is caring!

Embarkation day can feel like controlled chaos, especially if you’re new to cruising. The last thing you want is to spend hours waiting in the terminal when you could be sipping a cocktail on deck. I’ve learned these shortcuts the hard way, and now I’m sharing them with you so your cruise vacation starts stress-free from the moment you arrive at the port.

Even if you’ve cruised before, the boarding process has evolved significantly over the past couple of years. These updated tips will help you skip the lines, avoid common mistakes, and get on board faster than ever.

12 Cruise Boarding Day Shortcuts

1. Download and Update Your Cruise Line App Before You Leave Home

Don’t make the mistake I recently made by assuming you already have the latest version. Cruise lines frequently update their apps, so it’s essential to have the most current version before you arrive at the terminal. Download or update it at home, not at your hotel, and definitely not at the cruise terminal where Wi-Fi can be unreliable.

Your boarding pass will be available directly in the app, but take a screenshot just in case the Wi-Fi connection is unstable. You’ll also find your safety briefing information, muster station details, daily schedules, and restaurant hours all in one place.

2. Be Ready for Security (It’s More Like Airport Security Than You Think)

Many first-timers don’t realize that cruise ship security resembles airport security. Depending on your departure port, it can be quite thorough. Alaska cruises departing from Vancouver or Seattle require you to remove belts, jackets, and sometimes laptops from bags.

No matter which port you’re departing from, be prepared to put carry-on bags, purses, phones, and electronics through X-ray machines. If you’re bringing wine (most cruise lines allow one bottle per person), keep it easily accessible at the top of your bag for inspection.

The same applies to magnet hooks and any medical devices, such as CPAPs.

One key difference from flying: there’s no 3-1-1 liquid rule for cruises. You can bring full-size liquids, but most cruise lines won’t allow water bottles through security, not because of liquid restrictions, but to prevent people from sneaking in prohibited items.

3. Choose the Earliest Possible Boarding Time

Most major cruise lines, including Royal Caribbean, Carnival, Norwegian, and Celebrity, require you to select a preferred boarding time during online check-in. If you want to board early, choose the earliest available time slot, typically around 10:00 or 10:30 AM.

The secret? Complete your online check-in as soon as it opens. Royal Caribbean opens check-in about 30 days before your cruise, while Carnival opens it around 15 days prior. Set your alarm for midnight when check-in opens to snag those coveted early slots.

Princess Cruises has eliminated assigned boarding times but typically opens boarding as early as 10:00 AM. You’ll still need to complete online check-in to qualify for the fastest “green lane” boarding process.

While you don’t want to arrive much earlier than your assigned time, there is usually a 30-minute window. Arriving too early might mean waiting outside in less-than-ideal weather conditions.

4. Keep All Documents Easily Accessible

I keep all our important documents in a dedicated family travel wallet where I can store passports, IDs, boarding documents, and cash. This stays on me at all times and slides easily into my carry-on bag when needed.

Even if you have everything on your phone app, consider printing backup boarding documents as a precaution. Some cruise lines like Carnival still prefer printed documents, and having physical backups never hurts when technology decides not to cooperate.

5. Choose Your Pre-Cruise Hotel Strategically

Unless you’re planning to explore the departure city for several days, pick a practical hotel within 10-15 minutes of the cruise terminal. Cities like Miami and New York can have heavy traffic, so factor in extra travel time even for short distances.

Some hotels near cruise terminals offer included transfers or affordable transportation options. Check the expected traffic conditions on your embarkation day – marathons or festivals can significantly impact travel times. Even if it should only take 15 minutes to reach the terminal, give yourself at least an hour.

6. Consider Upgrading Your Cabin for Priority Benefits

Cabin upgrades often come with priority embarkation perks, especially suites. Even if you didn’t book a suite initially, consider bidding for an upgrade. You may pay a bit more than your original cabin cost, but you’ll enjoy a better cruise experience and priority boarding privileges.

7. Purchase Priority Boarding Add-Ons

Several cruise lines offer paid priority boarding programs. Royal Caribbean has “The Key,” Carnival offers “Faster to the Fun,” and Norwegian has “Priority Access.” These packages typically include priority embarkation, specialty dining, Wi-Fi, and other perks.

We tried Royal Caribbean’s The Key and found it worthwhile, especially at a discounted rate. The package included priority boarding, a special lunch, luggage delivery service, and Wi-Fi for the entire cruise.

8. Request Wheelchair Assistance if Needed

If you use a wheelchair or have mobility issues, contact your cruise line to arrange assistance. This often results in expedited boarding through elevator access, rather than waiting in long lines and navigating escalators. Your travel companions typically receive the same priority treatment.

You can arrange this by calling the cruise line directly, filling out forms on their website, or having your travel agent handle the request.

9. Secure Your Luggage Tags Properly

Don’t forget to print your luggage tags before arriving at the terminal. You’ll typically find them in an email from the cruise line or on the website where you completed check-in.

Invest in plastic reusable luggage tag holders to protect your tags from being torn off or damaged by rain. These simple protectors can save you time searching for your luggage once on board if tags become separated from your bags.

10. Bring Small Bills for Tips

Have $5, $10, and $1 bills ready before boarding. You’ll want to have cash for shuttle drivers from your hotel to the terminal (tipping is customary in North America) and for porters at the cruise terminal who assist with loading your luggage onto carts.

11. Take Advantage of High Loyalty Status

If you’ve cruised several times with the same cruise line, check if your loyalty status includes priority embarkation benefits. Many cruise lines offer this perk to repeat customers, and it comes at no additional cost.

12. Book Ship-Within-Ship Experiences

Several cruise lines offer exclusive areas with priority boarding benefits. Norwegian has The Haven, MSC features the Yacht Club with butler service, Princess offers the Sanctuary Collection, Holland America has Club Orange, and Celebrity boasts The Retreat.

While these premium experiences incur an additional cost, they offer numerous benefits beyond priority boarding, including escorted boarding and dedicated amenities throughout your cruise.

Bonus Tip: Consider Boarding Later

This might sound counterintuitive, but if crowds stress you out and you don’t have priority boarding, consider choosing a later embarkation time. You can board after most passengers are already on the ship, avoiding the initial rush entirely.

Just don’t cut it too close as cruise ships typically require all passengers to be on board 90 minutes to 2 hours before departure. Check your specific ship’s requirements and plan accordingly.

Personally, I prefer to board as soon as the embarkation process opens. However, some cruisers board later to avoid waiting in lines.
