If you’re cruising with MSC for the first time, you’re probably wondering what to expect. MSC Cruises offers a unique cruise experience, blending European elegance, fantastic itineraries, and beautiful cruise ships at an affordable price.
If you’re cruised with some other cruise lines, you may notice some differences on MSC cruise ships from the popular North American brands. However, these aren’t necessarily bad things.
With an increasing number of MSC ships departing from the USA in the coming year, including the debut of MSC World America, it’s a great time to explore what this cruise line has to offer.
Whether you’re a first-time cruiser or a seasoned traveler, understanding what to expect beforehand can make your trip even more enjoyable. Here are some tips and tricks to help you get the most out of your MSC cruise, from leveraging the status match program to navigating dining options like a pro.
25 Helpful MSC Cruise Tips
1. Understanding MSC Cruises
MSC Cruises is a European cruise line in the contemporary cruise category, similar to Royal Caribbean, Carnival, and Norwegian Cruise Line. The company is expanding its presence in North America, with several ships sailing from Florida ports.
While MSC is popular in Europe, North American travelers should expect a diverse, international passenger mix, which brings unique cultural experiences on board.
For instance, on our latest MSC Cruise, we were in an elevator with cruise passengers from Italy, Germany, Spain, Mexico, and the United States. We enjoyed meeting cruise guests from other places worldwide. However, if you’re used to only hearing English on a cruise, this may take some time to get used to.
2. Take Advantage of the Status Match Program
Before you set sail, consider enrolling in MSC’s Status Match program, which allows cruise passengers with loyalty status from another cruise line to enjoy similar perks on MSC. The process involves submitting a simple form on the MSC website, which could earn you some benefits onboard.
Before our first MSC Cruise, we submitted our status match form, which was quickly processed and approved. This is certainly worth doing if you have a high loyalty status on another cruise line.
3. Booking with Different Experiences
MSC offers four different tiers of cruise experiences:
Bella: The entry-level package includes basic cabin accommodations and dining options.
Fantastica: Adds perks like cabin selection, preferred dining times (though not guaranteed), and continental breakfast.
Aurea: Offers more luxury with access to exclusive areas like the Top 19 Solarium. It also includes 24-hour room service and a welcome package (prosecco and chocolate).
Yacht Club: MSC’s premium, all-inclusive option provides top-tier luxury. It includes butler service, access to the Yacht Club pool, restaurant, bar, and lounge area, and priority embarkation and debarkation.
Choosing the right experience level can help manage costs while ensuring you get the desired onboard amenities.
4. Passengers Can’t Embark With Wine or Soft Drinks
Unlike other cruise lines, MSC doesn’t permit passengers to board the ship with wine or soft drinks. However, beverage packages and individual drinks can be purchased onboard the cruise ship.
During my time onboard MSC, I purchased the Easy Plus drink package. It included a wide variety of beers, wine, soft drinks, specialty coffees, and top-shelf liquor.
A bonus on MSC Cruises is that there is an espresso coffee machine at every bar. As a big coffee drinker, I certainly took advantage of this.
5. Dress for the Theme Nights
Although it’s not mandatory, it’s a good idea to pack an outfit for Gala Night (formal night). Onboard MSC cruise ships, many people dress to impress on formal nights. While not black tie formal, you’ll likely see cocktail attire or sparkly party dresses on ladies and nice outfits for guys.
Furthermore, pack a white outfit for the “White Night” party. On White Night, everyone wears white outfits around the cruise ship and to the white party.
Other themed evenings may also be like Tropical Night and 80’s Night. Although not required, many people bring special outfits for these fun themed nights.
6. Key Cards at Your Cabin
Unlike some cruise lines, MSC typically has your key cards waiting in your cabin. So, on embarkation day, your boarding pass will get scanned as you enter the cruise ship and then you can head to your cabin.
Depending on when you board, your cruise cabin may not be ready yet. However, you can grab your key card, drop off your carry-on luggage, and indulge in the embarkation day activities.
7. Safety Drill Procedures
MSC has modified its muster drill, now requiring passengers to check in at the muster station and watch the safety video in their cabin. To confirm completion, you’ll need to call a designated number (881) from your cabin phone.
On MSC, the safety drill procedure is very efficient and straightforward. It’s best to complete the muster drill process immediately to fully enjoy embarkation day.
8. Navigating Drink Packages
Pre-purchasing dining and drink packages can save you money. Drink packages often include beverages up to a certain value and can cover specialty coffees.
It’s best to book these packages online before your cruise, though promotions may also be available once you’re onboard.
MSC offers three alcoholic beverage packages (Easy Package, Easy Plus Package, and Premium Extra Package). Each package includes drinks up to a certain value.
Onboard MSC also has a non-alcoholic drink package (Alcoholic Free Package) and a package for kids (Minors Package).

9. Making Dining Reservations
Whether you choose to dine in the specialty restaurants or stick with the included main dining room, it is recommended that you confirm dining times at the reservations desk on embarkation day.
On the first day of your cruise, you will be assigned a table in the main dining room and a dining time. You will then eat at the same table and have the same waiters every evening of your cruise.
The MSC app is a helpful tool for checking dining menus and choosing which nights to dine at specialty venues. It’s important to note that specialty dining reservations can be made via the MSC app.
10. Food and Dining Expectations
The food on MSC was a pleasant surprise. We were very impressed that the buffet offers various options, including pasta, carved meats, salads, fresh fruits, and some of the best pizza at sea.
However, if you’re used to cruising on mainstream cruise lines, the casual dining experience is different on MSC. For instance, MSC doesn’t have separate casual dining spots like poolside grills or snack bars.
Onboard MSC, everything is centralized in the large buffet. Other specialty items like gelato and Venchi chocolate cost extra but are worth trying.
On MSC’s new ships, MSC World Europa and MSC World America, there are some included casual dining venues positioned around the cruise ships. However, this is not the case on the older MSC cruise ships

11. Healthier Eating Options
MSC’s buffet features a wide range of fresh fruits, vegetables, cheeses, and lighter options, which may appeal to those looking to eat healthy while at sea.
At the same time, delicious breads and freshly baked pastries are available to enjoy.
MSC really shines in the healthier food options department, especially when healthy food can sometimes be hard to find on cruises. If you’re looking to eat healthy during your cruise, take advantage of the healthy options at the buffet.
12. Main Dining Room Experience
The main dining room on MSC Cruises offers multiple dining locations throughout the ship. Accessing the dining menu is quite convenient, with QR codes available at each table for viewing on your phone.
Paper menus are also available if preferred. If you want a paper menu, just ask your waiter, and they will promptly provide you with one.
The dining atmosphere is more casual since the tables are closely placed, and the service tends to be efficient. I’d consider the dining experience to be considered “banquet style.”
A typical dinner service can last around 90 minutes, which allows guests to enjoy their meal without spending the entire evening dining.
I enjoyed the faster-paced dinners as they allowed me to see the shows and onboard entertainment. Furthermore, since the service was quick, the food was always fresh and warm.
13. Specialty Dining
MSC Cruises also offers specialty dining options, which can be booked either individually or as part of a dining package. The specialty restaurants are known for their high-quality food and service, providing a culinary experience that stands out from the main dining room.
Specialty dining is ideal for those who want to elevate their dining experience with unique dishes and attentive service. Going to a specialty restaurant is also a great way to celebrate a special occasion like an anniversary or a birthday.
14. Unique Brunch Offerings
An interesting feature on MSC Cruises is the “Tour De Brunch,” a brunch menu served on sea days in the main dining room. While this is still being tested on some ships, the hope is to expand it across the fleet.
When we sailed on MSC Seascape, we experienced Tour De Brunch, which was amazing. On sea days around 11:00 a.m., cruisers can indulge in an extensive brunch menu in the main dining room.
Items ranged from omelets to pancakes to even hamburgers, so there is something for everyone!
It adds a special touch to mornings at sea, with a diverse menu that improves the overall cruise experience. If you’re looking to start your sea day on the right foot, check out Tour De Brunch.
15. Onboard Payment Process
MSC has streamlined the payment process by allowing guests to link their credit cards to their onboard account before the cruise begins. This setup eliminates the need for additional steps after boarding, though passengers are encouraged to verify their payment information at guest services.
Once your credit card is connected, cruise passengers can purchase items at duty-free, gift shops, and other onboard shops.
Furthermore, bank machines are located around the cruise ship, so cruise guests can link their credit cards to their onboard accounts.
16. MSC Wristband Technology and Elevator System
MSC’s wristbands are available for purchase and offer a convenient alternative to cruise cards for payments and cabin access. They have a sleek design and are quite comfortable to wear around the cruise ship.
Although they look similar to the Princess Medallion, the technology is not as advanced. However, they are still a convenient alternative to the traditional cruise card.
It’s important to know that traditional cruise cards are still needed for disembarking and port visits.
The elevators on MSC ships operate with a unique system. Guests select their desired deck before boarding, and an elevator is then assigned to each group.
While it works efficiently for individuals, it can become less effective when large groups enter the same elevator, causing delays. When the elevator dock is busy, it is a good idea to use the stairs or try a different set of elevators.
17. Pools, Hot Tubs, and Outdoor Spaces
MSC cruise ships feature several pools, although they tend to be on the smaller side. However, there is plenty of space surrounding the pools for lounge chairs.
If poolside seating is not available, additional chairs can be found along the ship’s sides, offering sea views from various decks. During our cruise, there were times when we couldn’t find seating right next to the pool, so we went to the side of the cruise ship and found seats that offered a beautiful ocean view in a quieter area.
We noticed that the hot tubs are not as warm as expected, with temperatures being more lukewarm. This detail is worth noting for those who enjoy a true hot tub experience.

18. Family-Friendly Amenities
MSC Cruises caters well to families, with amenities such as water parks, splash zones, and kids’ clubs on newer ships. They also offer an arcade called the “Hall of Games,” which features classic arcade games, virtual reality games, and an F1 simulator.
A recurring promotion allows children under 17 to sail for free for families sharing a cabin, making MSC an affordable cruise option. This promotion and MSC’s overall value make the cruise line a great choice for family cruise vacations.
19. Onboard Entertainment
The entertainment on MSC Cruises is varied and enjoyable, especially in the evenings. There are live music performances in the atrium, various production shows in the theater, karaoke sessions, and interactive audience games.
While there’s plenty of entertainment available, some other cruise lines may offer a more polished experience in this area.
If you’re used to the entertainment onboard Royal Caribbean, Princess, or Norwegian, you may be underwhelmed by the entertainment onboard MSC.
However, we noticed a significant improvement in the entertainment onboard MSC on our most recent cruise.
If it’s your first time sailing on MSC, experiencing the entertainment is a good idea. Many shows, live performers, and comedians differ from other cruise lines, creating a refreshing cruise experience.
20. Ocean Cay Marine Reserve
Ocean Cay, MSC’s private island in the Bahamas, is a standout feature with its natural beauty and pristine beaches. It offers a serene atmosphere with plenty of lounge chairs, a beach barbecue, and calm waters, perfect for families with young children.
Guests can use their drink packages and Wi-Fi on the island, extending the cruise experience seamlessly.
Since there are so many beach areas, and only one cruise ship can visit at a time, the island feels spacious, making it easy to have a relaxing beach day.
The cabanas on Ocean Cay provide shade, seating for up to six people, water bottles, towels, and floating mats, all at a reasonable price compared to other cruise lines. However, bar service is not included, so guests must visit the bar for drinks.
The cabana experience is still a worthwhile investment for those seeking a private, shaded area.

21. Consider Upgrading to the MSC Yacht Club
If you want a more luxurious experience, the MSC Yacht Club offers exclusive amenities like a private lounge, dedicated dining options, a private pool area, and priority boarding. It’s a great option for guests who want a more personalized and upscale experience, with perks such as 24-hour butler service and access to premium areas on the ship.
Although MSC Yacht Club costs extra, based on our recent MSC Seascape cruise, it’s certainly worth the splurge. The personalized service, private dining room, and exclusive pool deck were truly special.
22. Visit the Spa
MSC Aurea Spa is known for its range of wellness treatments, but the thermal area is a hidden gem that’s worth checking out. It includes a sauna, steam room, salt relaxation room, and whirlpool.
Booking a spa pass gives you access to these facilities throughout the cruise, providing a relaxing escape from the busy, fast-paced ship environment.
During my cruise, the spa was the perfect place to go and relax and rejuvenate. I would leave my phone in a locker and spend around an hour in the different saunas, steam rooms, and whirlpools.
23. Try the MSC-Exclusive “Chocolate at Sea” Experience by Venchi
MSC has partnered with Italian chocolatier Venchi to offer a unique “Chocolate at Sea” experience. This includes specialty chocolate bars, gelato, and a chocolate-themed cocktail menu.
Visit the Venchi 1878 chocolate shop onboard to enjoy these treats, and consider purchasing a chocolate-making or tasting experience for a fun onboard activity.
On the last day of our cruise, we realized we didn’t get any souvenirs for our family and friends back home. Luckily, we ran to the Venchi shop onboard and purchased some sweet treats for friends and family as souvenirs.
24. Pack a European Power Adapter
MSC ships are European-owned, and while most cabins offer European and U.S. outlets, having a European power adapter can be useful, especially if you have multiple devices to charge.
This ensures you can use both types of outlets in your cabin, making it easier to keep all your electronics powered up.
As someone who uses several electronic devices to work while I’m at sea, I always pack a European power adapter to use all of the outlets in my stateroom.

25. Service and Guest Demographics
Service on MSC Cruises generally receives positive reviews, with twice-daily housekeeping ensuring well-maintained cabins. The international nature of MSC’s clientele, even on cruises departing from U.S. ports, creates a diverse onboard atmosphere.
Announcements are typically in English and Italian, but other languages can be heard, reflecting the European influence.
The service style may vary depending on the expectations of different guests. American travelers may expect more conversational interactions compared to Europeans, who might prefer straightforward service.
MSC’s staff is adapting to these differences, especially on U.S. based cruises.
Having been on two separate MSC sailings in the last year, we’ve noticed huge progress in adapting to the North American market. The entertainment, food, and service have become more polished and appealing to the North American demographic in the last few months.
