I Tried a Short Weekend Cruise - Here’s What Surprised Me!

Sharing is caring!

Three-day cruises are a controversial topic among avid cruise travelers. Some cruisers appreciate the convenience of a quick escape, while others find the experience too short to enjoy everything a cruise has to offer.

I recently had the opportunity to sail on a three-night cruise aboard Celebrity Silhouette, departing from Fort Lauderdale with stops in Key West and Nassau. This short itinerary is ideal for a weekend getaway, offering a taste of cruising without a significant time commitment.

Although there was much to love about this short cruise, it also comes with limitations that are important to consider.

In this post, I share my honest experience and observations from this sailing. From the energetic atmosphere onboard to the challenge of fitting everything in, I will cover what worked well and what felt a little rushed.

If you’re considering booking a short cruise, this will certainly help you decide!

What I Loved About Taking a Short Cruise

Short Weekend Getaway

One of the biggest advantages of a three-day cruise is how easy it is to fit into a busy schedule. A short sailing like this is ideal for a quick escape without having to take a full week off work or plan extensively.

From the moment I stepped on board Celebrity Silhouette, I felt like I was on vacation. It was a great way to reset, enjoy some sunshine, and explore a couple of interesting ports in just a few days.

The itinerary was simple and stress-free, making it a perfect option for those who are craving a getaway but have limited time.

Fun Atmosphere

I was pleasantly surprised by the overall energy on board Celebrity Silhouette. While Celebrity Cruises is typically known for its more relaxed and refined ambiance, this particular sailing had a different vibe.

A lively and upbeat atmosphere throughout the ship added to the cruise’s overall enjoyment. It was not a traditional party cruise, but there were definitely fun moments, including live music, poolside activities, and cruisers enjoying alcoholic beverages.

The cruise had a nice balance of sophistication and entertainment, which surprised me.

Lack of Kids

One of the standout features of this cruise was the demographic on board. There were very few children since it was a short sailing on Celebrity.

The atmosphere felt closer to what you might find on an adults-only cruise, similar to Virgin Voyages. This made a noticeable difference in terms of relaxation.

The public areas were quieter, the lido deck felt more serene, and I found it easier to enjoy the ship’s amenities without the hustle and bustle that sometimes comes with family-friendly sailings.

While this may not be ideal for those looking for a kid-friendly weekend getaway, it was a huge plus for me.

Great Food

One thing I was curious about before sailing on this cruise was whether the food quality would match what you typically experience on a longer sailing trip. New cruisers might assume that a shorter itinerary means a scaled-back dining experience, but that was not the case at all. The food throughout the cruise was excellent.

We chose to stick with the included dining options and mainly ate in the buffet, casual dining venues, and the main dining room. They all offered a great selection, and the quality of the food exceeded my expectations.

Every meal felt thoughtfully prepared, with various options catering to different tastes and preferences.

The service in the dining venues also stood out. While there is not as much time to get to know your servers as you would on a seven-night cruise, the staff remained friendly, accommodating, and attentive. The overall dining experience was consistent with what I had expected from Celebrity Cruises.

Although we did not try them on this sailing, the specialty restaurants were open and available to cruise passengers looking for a more elevated or unique dining experience.

Affordability

One of the benefits of a three-day cruise is its affordability. Compared to a standard seven-day sailing, the cost is significantly lower, making it an attractive option for budget-conscious travelers.

On my recent trip onboard the Celebrity Silhouette, I noticed that the shorter duration naturally limited the temptation to indulge in numerous onboard extras.

For instance, we usually purchase beverage packages. However, we decided not to do so on this sailing, as we didn’t plan on drinking much during a 3-day cruise with two days in port.

Similarly, we skipped the Wi-Fi package and dined exclusively at the included restaurants, foregoing specialty dining. This approach not only saved money but also simplified the experience, allowing us to enjoy the cruise without the pressure to maximize every amenity.

Great Option for First-Time Cruisers

For those new to cruising, a short voyage serves as an excellent introduction. The three-day itinerary provides a taste of life at sea without the commitment of a longer trip, both in terms of time and finances.

Departing from Fort Lauderdale and visiting ports like Key West and Nassau, the cruise offered a manageable schedule with minimal risk of encountering rough seas, which can be a concern for some first-time cruisers.

Downsides of Taking a Short Cruise

You Never Feel Settled In

Celebrity Library

One of the biggest challenges of a short cruise is the feeling that it ends just as quickly as it begins. As soon as you start to get comfortable and find your rhythm onboard, it is already time to start packing up.

I found that by the time I had unpacked and explored a few areas of the ship, the cruise was halfway over. There simply is not enough time to experience everything.

Whether trying all the dining venues, seeing the shows, or enjoying the spa, it can feel like you are rushing through the trip rather than fully relaxing.

It Can Get Rowdy

While our sailing on Celebrity Silhouette was relatively calm and well-balanced, short cruises can sometimes attract a livelier crowd. In the past, I experienced this firsthand on a four-night sailing aboard Carnival Venezia, which had a very different atmosphere.

These shorter itineraries tend to draw groups looking for a quick party getaway, which can lead to a more energetic and, at times, rowdy environment.

There are plenty of stories from cruisers who book a weekend cruise expecting a peaceful escape, only to find themselves in the middle of what feels like a floating party.

The atmosphere can vary depending on the cruise line, time of year, and itinerary, so it is something to keep in mind when booking.

Port Intensive

Nassau-cruise-port

Our three-day cruise included two port stops, meaning we had very little time at sea. After departing Fort Lauderdale in the late afternoon, we arrived in Key West the next morning.

We sailed overnight again and docked in Nassau the following day. By the next morning, we were back in Fort Lauderdale preparing to disembark.

With such a port-heavy itinerary, the cruise felt non-stop. While visiting two destinations in three days sounds exciting, the lack of a sea day made it harder to unwind.

In our case, we chose to stay onboard in Nassau and used that day to relax. It allowed us to enjoy the pool deck, take our time at breakfast, and make the most of the ship’s amenities without feeling rushed.
