Cruising has come a long way in the last few years, and most of the changes are making waves for all the right reasons. From smoother embarkation processes to onboard tech upgrades and even menu updates, cruise lines are listening to feedback and finding ways to elevate the experience.
We asked the Life Well Cruised Facebook community to share the changes they’ve loved most, and the response was incredible with over 400 comments. Cruisers shared their favorite updates, the little things that make a big difference, and yes… even a few opinions that stirred up some controversy.
Whether you’re a seasoned cruiser or planning your first voyage, these are updates you’ll want to know about (and maybe weigh in on yourself).
10 Best Cruise Line Changes

1. Muster Drill
Remember when muster drills meant standing shoulder to shoulder in a crowded area, waiting for that one person who didn’t show up on time? Those days are mostly behind us.
Many cruise lines have replaced the traditional muster drill with a faster, self-guided process. Now, you can watch a short safety video on your stateroom TV or in the cruise app and then check in at your muster station at your convenience. The result? Less waiting, less crowding, and more time to start enjoying your vacation.
This change was mentioned countless times in the Life Well Cruised community, with one member saying they loved “Muster drill! I do not miss the days of having to stand in the crowded area waiting for every person to cooperate.” That comment alone received over 200 likes, showing just how popular this update has become with cruisers
2. Handwashing Stations in the Buffet
Cruiser passengers have noticed and loved this one: dedicated handwashing stations right at the entrance of the buffet.
Instead of just relying on hand sanitizer, many ships now have actual sinks with soap and water, making it easier to keep hands clean before meals. It’s a simple change that not only feels more hygienic but also helps reduce the spread of germs on board.
As one Life Well Cruised community member shared, they loved seeing “hand wash stations in the buffet,” and many others agreed. It’s a small addition that makes a big difference to peace of mind while enjoying all those buffet favorites.
3. No Strict Rules for Dinner

One change that’s been a welcome relief for many cruisers is the move away from strict dining rules. Traditional fixed dining times and rigid dress codes are becoming less common as cruise lines introduce more flexible options.
Many ships now offer “anytime dining,” allowing guests to eat when they’re ready rather than sticking to an early or late seating. Dress codes have also relaxed on several cruise lines, giving cruisers the freedom to dress up if they like, or keep it casual if they prefer.
As one Life Well Cruised community member put it, they love seeing “no strict rules for dinner.” This flexibility makes it easier for families, groups, and anyone who wants to enjoy their evening on their own schedule.
4. Enforcing the 30-Minute Chair Hog Rule

There’s nothing more frustrating than heading to the pool deck, only to find every chair “reserved” with towels and flip-flops… but no people in sight. Thankfully, some cruise lines have stepped up their game by enforcing a 30-minute rule for unattended items on lounge chairs.
Crew members now monitor the pool areas and remove belongings if chairs are left empty for too long, freeing up space for guests who actually want to use them. This simple rule helps keep the pool deck fair and enjoyable for everyone.
One Life Well Cruised community member pointed out how much they appreciated this change, saying it makes lounging by the pool so much less stressful. Many others in the group echoed the sentiment, calling it one of the best new policies in years.

5. Banning Bluetooth Speakers
This change made headlines recently when Carnival officially banned Bluetooth speakers on their ships. While it stirred up quite a bit of debate on social media, many cruisers believe it was a much-needed update.
For those in favor, the policy helps keep public areas like pools, lounges, and open decks more peaceful. It ensures that everyone can enjoy their own vacation vibe without competing playlists in the background.
One Life Well Cruised community member shared that there is “no room for Bluetooth speakers on a cruise ship.” Many others agreed, saying they prefer to relax to the ship’s music or the sound of the ocean rather than someone else’s tunes blasting nearby.
6. Virgin Voyages

While not a policy change, the arrival of Virgin Voyages has definitely shaken up the cruise world in recent years. This adults-only cruise line offers a completely fresh approach, from its trendy ships to its all-inclusive style pricing.
One Life Well Cruised community member summed it up perfectly, saying they loved “Virgin Voyages, no kids, and all specialty dining and tips included in the price.”
For many cruisers, this concept feels like a breath of fresh sea air. With no kids on board, a focus on elevated dining experiences without the added fees, and gratuities already factored into the fare, Virgin Voyages appeals to travelers looking for a more modern and stress-free cruise vacation.

7. More Non-Smoking Areas on Cruise Ships
For many cruisers, one of the best changes in recent years has been the expansion of non-smoking areas on ships. With more smoke-free spaces indoors and on open decks, guests can enjoy fresh air and relaxing environments without worrying about secondhand smoke.
A Life Well Cruised community member highlighted this as one of their favorite updates, noting how much they appreciate “more non-smoking areas” on board. This change has been especially popular with families and those who prefer cleaner air while lounging by the pool or enjoying a cocktail at the bar.
While most cruise lines still allow smoking in designated areas, the move toward more smoke-free zones reflects the growing demand for a healthier and more enjoyable experience for all cruise guests.
8. Cruise Bundles That Include It All

Cruise lines have started offering bundled packages that include gratuities, drink packages, Wi-Fi, and even specialty dining—and many cruisers are here for it. These “all-in” style fares take the guesswork out of budgeting and make it easier to enjoy your vacation without worrying about add-ons.
I recently tried the Princess Premier package, and found it to be such a great value. Knowing that gratuities, drinks, Wi-Fi, and specialty dining were already included in the price made the cruise feel more relaxing and stress-free. It really allowed us to focus on the experience instead of the extras.
This change has been especially popular with cruisers who prefer a more all-inclusive feel to their vacation. While not everyone opts for the bundles, having the choice is a nice perk for those who want to simplify their cruise planning.
9. Solo Cruise Cabins

Cruise lines are finally paying attention to solo travelers, and the addition of solo cabins on many ships has been a game changer. These cozy, well-designed staterooms give solo cruisers their own space without the dreaded single supplement fee that used to make cruising alone so expensive.
One Life Well Cruised community member mentioned how much they appreciated this change, and I couldn’t agree more. I actually sailed in a solo studio cabin onboard Norwegian Cruise Line, and it was a fantastic experience. The cabin felt modern and comfortable, and it was so nice to have my own private space while still enjoying all the social aspects of cruising.
This trend is catching on across multiple cruise lines, making cruising more accessible and enjoyable for solo travelers than ever before.

10. Facial Recognition for Faster Disembarkation
Disembarkation day has a reputation for being slow and stressful, but technology is helping to change that. Many cruise lines and ports have introduced facial recognition systems that speed up the process of getting off the ship and clearing customs.
Instead of waiting in long lines and digging through your bag for travel documents, the system scans your face and matches it to your passport photo in seconds. The first time I experienced this, I was amazed at how seamless it was. I walked off the ship and through customs in minutes, and it felt like the smoothest ending to a cruise I’ve ever had.
This upgrade has been a hit with cruisers who appreciate the faster, more efficient process. Especially after a week of relaxation when no one wants to wait in line!
